Ok, so I got a client, still new who is a dentist about 3 months ago, paying me about $300 a month to do their SEO. However, they recently proposed that they would rather do what one of their competitors did, which was; payed an SEO company a one time LIFE time fee of $7000 CASH. Of course their competitor is on the first page as well. They told me to get back to them with my answer on March 27th or they may consider finding someone else who will take them up on their offer.

Question for you is: what do you guys think? What should I do, take the 7K CASH and work on their SEO for a life time? lol. Is that too much risk and responsibility?

First time being in this position, has anyone been in this position? I didn't know some companies would charge this way.

Advice, suggestions, any words of wisdom will be helpful. :)

There's no way you can guarantee for certainty that they will be #1 for the life of their business.

Find out who their competitor is using and what the actual stipulation of the "lifetime" deal was.

I'm sure it's not as iron-clad as "you must keep us #1 forever".

Seriously? How much does that work out to be per hour?

Ask, him for trade, dental care for life for his SEO for life...see how he feels about that 'deal'.

Or take the money, fake your death the next day. :p

Is it easy task? How much time you use it every month? I wouldn't take that offer, if I use more than 3-5hours a month for their tasks.

So you get 2 years worth of payment. Then for the rest of your life you are at their beck and call because you opted to do SEO for life for a mere $7000.

For some companies, $7000 is a measly 7 months of SEO or less.

I would pass. You can easily make up that potential $300/month loss with 1-2 new clients. Dentist should be paying more than $300 anyway. Damn.

Avoid this offer and do not go for $7k. Now c'mon no one knows what will happen next week as Big G keeps on updating their algorithms. Other than that life time means even after they reach no.1 spot you will have to maintain their ranking.

For first 2 years it is fine, but after then if the big G updates it algorithm and if the site falla, you will have to fix it at no extra cost.

So it is like being their slave for a life time. A BIG NO NO.

Try and make a deal with them for 2 years of SEO, maybe they'd just rather pay you upfront. Or give them 3 years or something.

If that doesn't work try to explain to them that no one is going to do proper SEO for a lifetime for 7000 dollars.

    Just my 2 cents.

Problem is, he mentioned that one of the dentist's competitors paid a SEO company a one-time fee and they are ranked on the first page, so the dentist has the "proof" he needs that companies will do "proper" SEO for a one-time fee.

Pretty strong objection to overcome. The client probably isn't worth it.

I'd have to agree with as previously mentioned, ask him how he feels about free dental service. If he can't do it, then don't do it for him, either. There are plenty of businesses you can barter with, but I do it with a travel company and several service based businesses (legal, restaurants, auto, etc), and they hook me up every year I've worked with them. :D

Choose your battles carefully. I'd stick with the monthly billing after you pitch the lifetime dental issue and he says no. Think about it though, free dental and how nice would it be to take a date out to dinner and a show/movie, and have to pay for NONE of it because of the services you're providing? That's one perk.

i would decline and do this ^. if you explain that google changes their algorithms constantly, no one can guarantee a #1 ranking for life and google is getting smarter at recognizing and penalizing most of the seo methods that they use and the seo company might not even exist in 2 years from now.
if you explain this well enough, they might just stick with your 300/m

Negotiate, never accept the first offer! Even if it's a high offer, regardless. Negotiate ,

Very good points made above but the client is also taking a risk, which I'm sure is not the
OP's concern at this point. If the client doesn't ask you to sign a contract or agreement
then it could work out in your favor in the long run if something goes wrong.

On the other hand I agree with most above, it's not worth a lifetime agreement. Try to
negotiate for maybe 5 to 7 years. This I would think about considering.

    Dont accept it.

Yeah, $7k is huge, but the contract is LIFETIME..

Monthly is good or yearly is good.. Can I ask is that easy keyword? or very competitive keyword?

    ziplack: Yep, that's the offer.

jiffee: This is who their competitor using.
mechasheba: haven't worked out an hourly rate, but monthly its $300.

KeijoKala: yeah it is, for me anyway, so not concerned about that. before me they were number 13 for main keyword, i took them number 6 in a week.

    axus_auto: good question... LOL.

thanks for the advice so far everyone.
