SEO Question : CNAME or Redirect

Hello,

I am trying to make up my mind if to use Cname or redirects (either in htaccess or cPanel itself) for pointing to another site.

Does anyone know, in terms of SEO which is looked upon by search engines as being better?

I already know the pro's and cons of either method, just not the SEO benifit.

So anyone help me out with this please?

You should use a 301 (or 302, depending on your needs) rather than a CNAME as you're just going to have duplicate content then (not good for SEO). With a 301/302 you're telling the SE the content has moved, so you won't be duplicating content. 301 is permanent move and 302 is for a temporary one. Whichever reflects your needs. With 302, Google might choose the old or new title/url depending on what it thinks is best.

Nameserver, ip, and Cname are at a lower level of tpcip (they are DNS based) and search engines like DNS better than the upper layers of tcpip (like the application layer ie: browser and 301 redirects).

So why is your choice a 301 redirect?
(recall that Cname's are treated as 301 by search engines).

If the domain doesn't have any link juice, then you don't have to care.

If you got 10 domains all forwarding to the same place and none of them are 301's, google will pick the strongest one and penalize the rest. If "the rest" have no link profile, then you don't care if they do that.

If you have existing link juice you want passed on, or plan on doing linkbuilding to them, then do a 301.

They aren't the same.

You have bloggs.com and a CNAME of joe.bloggs.com - they are two different entities. It's like having www.bloggs.com and bloggs.com. If you visit joe.bloggs.com you will see the same content as bloggs.com, but they are different names. A 301 states - this content has moved and is now at bloggs.com instead of joe.bloggs.com. It will also redirect you. The CNAME won't. You put joe.bloggs.com in the address bar, it will stay as that.

To answer your question, I plan to use htaccess 301 redirects to point subdomains to affiliate links. I just wanted different opinions from people who have more experience than myself, regarding the two choices.

As for buying aged domains, well all my domains are all over 5 years...i havent honestly looked for aged domains. I did before but never found one with any of my keywords.

I already rank on the first page of google for all 4 of my main keywords. Im just consolidating / cementing my position before i pick more keywords.
