Google Loves movie backlinks and if u want best resullt spread out in all types HIGH PR aswell as video backlinks, remember that every video you upload is counted as html doc and count as backlinks, many times even better then high pr, just a tip,

I prefer backlinks from directory sites, high pr social bookmarking sites and those forum sites which are relevant to site theme.

I say manual link building is always better than the automated. I would be scared to try auto-backlinking. I want to know where my site is being placed. I heard too many bad stories about that. I do agree also that .edu or .gov are some of the best.

High PR backlinks is good and you have gain more traffic by getting high pr sites.

With the seemingly new changes now and panda slaps, I wonder has the playing field changed now concerning the best types of backlinks. It seems like the game is always changing. I had a website that was on the first page of Big G for a few months, but now it has disappeared, most likely sandboxed.

Everybody keeps saying "high PR" contextual backlinks, but that's false. High AUTHORITY (domain authority and page auth) contextual backlinks are the best. Mainly when the link to your site is on a page with few outbound links. PR does not indicate strength, but it can be a loose guideline. High PR doesn't hurt, and sounds nice, but when the site has a high PR thanks to a spammy backlink profile, it's going to show in authority algorithms.
