Best type of backlinks

I think that .gov and .edu are the best types of backlinks for some serious link juice.

Other then those, what do you think are the best kind of backlinks? There are directory submissions (which are my favorite), and article submissions.

Which do you think are the best backlinks for getting your site to the first page of the Big G and how powerful is backlinks from free directory submissions at this time?

I would think that directory submissions have some purpose. Do you really think that they are the least effective?

Contextual backlinks are most preferred. "edu" links don't mean anything by itself... most of the time people selling those are selling profile links or comment spam.
