Megaupload has been shut down.

So the US claim copyright infringement and that is enough to justify an extradition for non US citizens to be trialed and put to jail inside the US? I don't think so!

Copyright infringement is backed up by internal emails that talk about how to attract more warez to megaupload. Also there is other things megaupload gets charged with.

New zealand will give anyone to USA who would face charges of 12 months or more in USA and new zealand, so my bet would be kimble will be shipped to USA asap.

allot more are coming after sopa ... America bankrupt and wants to drag down everything.

That is absolutely NOT the point...

The website operated world wide... So I find it hard to believe that IF megaupload has to reimburse, that it should be only for companies in the US?

The USA of course think that they are at the top of the food chain and can simply have Kimble & co forfeit ALL of their property to the US.

An international company allegedly infringes US copyright... So the normal reaction would be to sue, but since it's the US entertainment industry of course they can take the shortcut and simply take everything down, have FBI agents fly over to NZ to investigate etc, that's bullshit.

It shouldn't work like that

America is a disgrace. They can corrupt the world of business, banks and money, but the INTERNET is MY life, I will not let them corrupt this as well.

I understand your anger but it doesnt make sense because there were no international right owners who took steps against megaupload except one who actually got money from megaupload a few months back from a settlement.

Besides, most media, movies, music are owned by american companies.

I know, that still doesn't make it right to raid a company, imprison the founder, even the employees!! and make a racketeering and conspiracy case out of it to set an example.

Fuck copyright, really... It's outdated and if the rights owners were smart they could make much more money by letting people access their content for free and share it.

But sadly nobody seems to be that smart of these gorillas.

P.S: And swizz beatz was/is the CEO, but not named in the indictment ? No wonder I guess, since Universal makes money with him?
But on the other hand even the head programmer gets arrested Oo

God this is a sad world we're living in

P.S: And these "estimates" are just silly, 500 million+ damage? I mean seriously, 1 download === 1 less dvd/cd whatever sale... not really.
Plus a lot of the content on Megaupload was legal, so normally they could not simply have them forfeit all of their property... In a normal world at least

Hmmmm hate speech is illegal in many countries in Europe, and carries more than a 12 month sentence.

Perhaps we should extradite the FoxNews team as they are broadcasting into Europe and have clearly broken our laws.......
this! lol

mediafire is even bigger hoster than megaupload and they are located in america and dont hide ... because they are smarter, they dont pay uploaders like megaupload (or youtube!!) and mainly: mediafire (or youtube) dont talk in internal email about piracy and how to attract more warez to the site.

You are right.

People that have not read the indictment will talk a bunch of nonsense and compare Megaupload with other sites.

If they would just read the indictment, they would see how megaupload was in the business of providing pirated content by helping providing storage for it and NOT taking it down even when sent C&D letters.

And they discussed all this thru emails.

Closing of Megaupload is a good news in my opinion.

Ehm? The US asked the authorities in NZ to arrest them and extradite the guys to the US... And that is exactly my point, the content was NOT only hosted in the US, some of it...

But none of the guys is actually a US citizen, they shouldn't be extradited just like that, we are talking about copyright claims and not murder!

You guys can not simply take people and trial them in the US when they are not US citizens... World Police

So the US claim copyright infringement and that is enough to justify an extradition for non US citizens to be trialed and put to jail inside the US? I don't think so!

The website operated world-wide! But the US of course claim a solitary exception, right? As always...

That's also why the official indictment says they have to forfeit ALL of their property to the United States Government... What a joke.

Unbelievable

Where have you been, this happens everyday with 1000s of people all over the world.
Other nations send people to the US for trial and the US sends people to other nations to stand trial.

It is an agreement that the nations have.
Not all nations participate--- cuba & Venezuela do not.

IF you commit a crime against a nation.... that nation has the right to ask your nation to send you to stand trial.

It happens everyday.

The US went after them because the material belonged to US companies.
Megaupload fuked up when they hosted pirated material under their name in Virginia.... that gave the US the jurisdiction.

Keep in mind... a crime is a crime.
They are sending a message.
If you steal.... and you think that you can hide in another country...
you are in for a surprise.

Bring on the nukes, this world needs cleansing..........................

It actually is.

They were crooks.

That fat azz was dealing in pirated goods.

If you read the indictment, you will see that they held uploading contest...
and they actually scammed the affiliates too.

They would let them upload and upload then ban them for putting copyrighted material.... but they would not remove the pirated stuff.

They were douche bags.

So America corrupts the internet by taking down a massive site that was peddling pirated content?

You cant really justify the actions of MU, and they got screwed by their own emails, bragging, and not following takedowns. Its also very clear that they were fully in the know about their sharing of copyright material.

What grinds my gears is that copyright should be (and actually is) a civil issue which is followed up with lawyers as opposed to police and thugs with guns. The conspiracy, racketeering, and money laundering charges are fluff added on to make it seem much worse than it is. Its not that these guys were white and didn't deserve to be closed down, its more that the government and foreign governments are complicit in acting as the MAFIAAs enforcers.

"Kim Schmitz is a German entrepreneur best known as the founder of the Megaupload website and associated sites. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Schmitz gained notoriety as a computer criminal who was convicted of credit card fraud, hacking, insider trading, and embezzlement." (c) Wikipedia

Not by taking down a site that deals with pirated content, but HOW they did it.

Don't come with your treaty agreements now.. that is a whole different story!

exactly this, thanks for putting into words what I thought!
And this my friends... IS SCARY

So please don't come and say that is normal, a lot of countries have treaties with the US blah blah... That is not the point, the point is that the stupid entertainment industry in the US has WAY to much power as it is now.

And they are known to abuse it big time! (talking about taking down videos of singing babies and sueing their mothers for damages)

Kim is smart. I remember his Mercedes with WiFi back in 2000...He'll make money again...

He is not as smart as you think.

If he was smart... he should of had a fall guy.
and he did not.

He was too greedy to have a fall guy.
Once he made his first 20 million he should of bailed out... sold the biz.
But he did not... he thought he was untouchable.
There is no such thing as untouchable.

There still needs to be a trial, but from what was on the emails, I doubt he will get off.
And now that they have all his information..... I really doubt it.

Prison changes you. I have seen gung ho/go getters go into prison and come out changed people.... broken.
