We all really need to read up on the law alot instead of panicking so much.

I'm quite aware of the laws surrounding copyrights/trademarks in the US. I find them draconian and seemingly their entire existence rests upon the idea that entrenching large mega corporations is better than free information and high competition.

We're one of the only countries in the world that think this way about it.

That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation. Inventions then cannot, in nature, be a subject of property.

No doubt Megavideos.com has got them down for the pirated movies they were hosting and collecting premium membership fee for allowing users to watch full movies.
Surprised to know that they were leasing around 25 petabytes of server space !!
They had around 1600 servers for hosting their sites in USA alone and many more around the world !!!

the scary thing is that, those of us who operate from outside the US might actually benefit from SOPA. The USA could be sending earning/jobs/business off shore, Sad but true! Still I am against it!

Just looked on my local news site - NZ is preparing to get them extradited from Auckland to the US. Never knew something like this could happen in "Middle Earth"...

The US is so fucked up, I hate living here.
We are NOT the world's damn police.

There is competition even though there are copyrights and trademarks.

As others have mentioned, Kim Dotcom is a hardcore big dog computer criminal and fraudster who has tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars. They've been after that guy for a while. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Schmitz

What scares me is that they arrested him right here in here in NZ because the US asked them to! That's the bit that seems really fucked up to me.
In 2001, Schmitz purchased $375,000 worth of shares of the nearly bankrupt company LetsBuyIt.com and subsequently announced his intention to invest EUR 50 million in the company. Unknown to others, Schmitz did not have the funds available to invest, although the announcement caused the share value of LetsBuyIt.com to jump by nearly 300%. Schmitz quickly sold the shares and profited $1.5 million as a result.
Now that is blackhat!

<rant>

Just came across this thread and wanted to have a little rant on one issue in this thread that a number of people have perpetuated.

Fact: .COM does not repeat not equal US.

You do NOT own this top level. Millions of .COM's are registered by non-us entities. The US does NOT own the Internet although it thinks that it does.

Sorry that was not meant to be anti-american - I love the people and the country. It's just the rather provincial nature of the mind-set
