Why does everyone get loony and paranoid when it comes to issues like this? Websites have been able to be seized/shutdown for years

Megaupload was using a .com(u.s. based) and a u.s. server. Which means it was operating in a area that the U.S. government had jurisdiction. Its just the same if you own property in the U.S. and let drug dealers sell drugs there,it can be seized.

FBI has closed megaupload?? I heard it now in the news

The FBI has no power whatsever to shut down a website or seize the domain of a website. A court has to order it to be seized,or put an injunction on it from operating.

Seems like this is the begin of the end. They don't even care if SOPA/PIPA gets passed, they do whatever they like and what the big entertainment industries want.

I'd be much more vigilant as owner of megaupload. Host that overseas, and lead them on a chase

Hey guy's, this is nothing new, this has been done for years it is just getting noticed now because of the bill that is not going to pass and never will!

They are sending a message.... loud and clear...
" if you have pirated content.... we are coming for you"

I believe it was a few years ago that I had mentioned this was the direction we were going and was laughed at by all the people saying "it will cost big corporations money"..

I think I'll say it again, it's not about the money --> they have a machine that prints it.

But they claimed jurisdiction based on a server in VA. God damn I hate my country sometimes... insteasd of worrying about their fiscal problems, they'll attack websites costing them millions in court/lawyer fees.
No one said politicians of any variety were the smartest bulbs on the tree.

Power hunger? yes.
Greedy? Absolutely.
Wise. Hardly.

What happened? We had a great thing going.

Megaupload is gone....

what about all of my pirated collection?.... it's gone.

I worked hard to steal it.... hahahahaha

I disagree. Politicians aren't stupid, they know EXACTLY what they're doing. Everything is going according to plan.

What the hell... that is bad news.

the vast majority of content being shared on Megaupload was in violation of copyright laws

I don't think so....

Perhaps Megavideo was bad for it. But how the hell do they know whats on megaupload as its all private files?!

*facepalm* People were posting links on sites with what it was.

This sucks...

The FBI said that more than 20 search warrants had been executed in nine countries, and that approximately $50m in assets had been seized
The US Justice Department said that Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and three others were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large.

There is also a charge of money laundering.

That might be the meat of the whole ordeal..
they just threw in copyright infringement to season the deal...
