Holy Crap!! Yahoo Site Explorer Shutting Down Today

I feel like i lost a close friend of mine. YSE was just perfect, easy, quick and free. I was searching for alternatives as well, without success :-(

Checking my own backlinks is more or less doable with google webmaster tool, but checking competition? Have no idea right now...

Closing of the yahoo explorer may be a good thing. For one competitors will have harder time finding out your backlinks sources. Thus making it harder to outrank you.

I'm reasonably new to BHW and had never bought scrapebox.

Wish I hadn't put that off!

Big question is, will scrapebox be updated to interface with Majestic SEO? I know it's not quite comparable to YSE at the moment, but Majestic are getting better, and their data is provided by a distributed computing project, which ultimately pays out to members, so I only expect them to keep growing.

Has anyone checked out Backlink Cloner which supposedly doesn't rely on the Yahoo Explorer API? Just Google Backlink Cloner to see the WSO on it and Reply #343 clarifies the Yahoo IP issue.

Essentially you won't be able to check your backlinks, pages indexed, or other vital information using Yahoo's free Site Explorer.

That means there are only paid solutions available like Majestic SEO and SEOMoz./QUOTE]

There are a few free alternatives:

• Bing Webmaster Tools - has almost the same data as Yahoo Site Explorer
• SEOmoz PRO free trial
• Majestic SEO (only free for your website, you just have to upload the verification file)
• Blekko, a search engine that is very transparent and shows you link data and some other cool stuff

Honestly I believe they shutdown Yahoo Site Explorer to get more people to use Bing Webmaster Tools which has all the same data. And coincidentally Bing Webmaster Tools had its major "honey badger" update just 5 months ago.

I guess we can use some tools that allow us to check backlinks, but not all they are free. I know one that is free - backlinkwatch. This is a great tool to use for checking backlinks. Anyone suggests new free tools to check backlinks?

With blekko you can use the link: operator and you can also append the name with /link and it appears to give you the same results, eg.

link:slashdot.org
slashdot.org /link

However the index sucks and the backlink info is pretty shitty, especially if you're trying to reverse engineer new sites that are going up the ranks fast. I guess it's better than nothing and it's free.

backlinkwatch sucks. I have no links when google reports around 1500 in webmaster tools.
this truly blows. No free option thats worth anything now.

I noticed that they updated the SEO Book firefox plugin to use Blekko. I tried it on one of my aged domains and was at first pleases since it looked like it might be okay. But then I used it on one of my domains that's only about 8 months old and got nothing despite there being plenty of links out there for the site. So it's better than nothing, but way suckier than YSE so far. Maybe they will improve it.

Also in Market Samurai they mention no more yahoo explorer feature now they use only Majestic SEO API service

My prediction is that SEO will become much easier.For thoose with the resources to continue with the same stragies

More Valuable Links(For thoose who have the resources/capital to acquire other tools, the selling price of High PR links will increase)

Less competition,resulting from a higher barrier-of-entry.

Ability to operate with less scrutiny - With YSE gone, the days of having a site's backlins at your fingertips is gone.If you want to know back links, then your going to have to spend some money.


Serious SEOers know ScrapeBox is/was the equivalent to giving a toddler an AK-47.

blekko for backlinks. They are great.

+1 for Blekko if you use Spyglass you will notice that they now use Blekko as well as they set it up in anticipation of this slow painful death of this thing people used to use called "YAHOO!"

If you learn the tricks that blekko allows you will found it very useful and helpful.

I don't really care for Yahoo. I was part of that Class-Action suit some years back because of click fraud. So F*ck Yahoo! I hope it all falls down...

I never used YSE to steal others BL's just to kind of gauge the quantity and quality of the links so I know what I have to do with my competing site(s). I am disappointed that it is shut down but majestic seems ok to me for information purposes. And I think I am going to like the idea of my blogs getting less spam.

Although someone spammed my own blog with my own link just yesterday, which I though was funny!

We'll, this would be bad news for those who are relying on Site Explorer for checking backlinks. I would suggest Majestic SEO as an alternative to check your backlinks, and it's really awesome.

At least I would thank Yahoo Site Explorer since I've first started using them till their last day.
