Case Study: Testing the effects of excessive backlinking

Man ... this whole bad links good links thing is so complicate and its confusing me ... I had a site lost its ranking because of AMR blast but while I use it again 3 months later to another site I get a boost in ranking.

I tried Dripable for my money site and ... BAD MISTAKE ... I didn't have the patience to kept doing it like you though. Good post man, keep it up and keep us posted with the results.

how many links does webmaster show?

also did you try blasting links with link, click here, read more, name of the domain etc........?

Very good thread and case study, I have done something similar with very agressive link building and I only saw the improvements after I stopped building links and left it like that for a month ;)

Update: my site which has lots of high quality DF links is now on page 2, jumped from page 4. I don't know if it was due to the recent update or what, but it's climbing and I'm getting a couple more sales.

I am wondering what would change if the following occurred:

1. What if the AMR links were removed?

2. What if the site was 301 redirected?

So the conclusion is that excessive backlinking completely fucks you ?

There are a lot of variables involved. But in this test, at least up to now, excessive linking has made the homepage URL disappear from Google. However, deep pages do still appear, but very far down the list.

Great thread,I think you aimed for too many different anchortexts.
This may sound strange but how about making your main keyword the only anchortext you use for ,say, the next 2 weeks.
I've tried different approaches on my own sites and only use 2 anchortexts max, great results.I prefer just setting up another site for other keywords if they are worth my while.

I do think google is struggling to know what to rank you for because you have too many variables for the anchortext.
Worth a shot I'd say.

Anyway great thread,I'd like to see you rank high for one of your keywords and I think trying by using your main keyword as anchortext will suprise you.

All the best with it..

So the myth is busted: You CAN blast your competitors away from page one.

I read it so often that if that is the case there would be a war everybody blasting everybody... oh well :o

So the myth is busted: You CAN blast your competitors away from page one.

I read it so often that if that is the case there would be a war everybody blasting everybody... oh well :o

My theory on how it works is as follows:

  1. You have X PageRank on a page.
  2. You link build to X+Y PageRank on a page.
  3. You get the benefit of Y incrementally over time. not all at once.
  4. If your stockpile of Y is out of proportion for how X tends to change over time then you get punished to a degree determined by the age of your website.

So the older the site and the more PR it currently has the more difficult it becomes to "blast it out of the SERPs".

You CAN blast a "low PR/new site" out of the SERPs with relative ease (2 to 3 minutes of work and 1-2 days of wait time with the right tool or service.)

You probably can't blast an older site out because for their age the amount of punishment will be too small to make much difference OR for their current PR "excessive back linking" compared to their current standing would unachievable or at least very impractical compared to just improving your standings via other means.

The place where it blows up in your face however is if the new website hangs in there long enough then you're attack becomes their advantage as website Age removes penalty amount over time. You get benefit for 10 months or so but then they get advantage for eternity after that. So depending on the longevity of your goals you might only make things more difficult for yourself in time by trying to "knock the other guy out".

Now if you really want to remove someone then you want to alter their keyword context. Use the wrong keyword context in linking to them. If the niche is "cars" then link to them in the niche of "toy cars" with low volumes of quality back links. Just try to help them rank better somewhere else. If you get the right kinds of authority sites validating the new context it will take an eternity to undo.

Don't forget to alter the URLs too...

http://www.competitor.com/?p=toy-cars
http://www.competitor.com/#toy-cars

etc...

If they don't use canonical tags then this is incredibly potent stuff because if the PR of the spoof URLs exceeds the PR of the original page URLs then original page is deemed a lower PR duplicate content page and goes to the supplemental indexes as all duplicate content pages eventually do. Then as long as the new URLs out rank the old and canonical tags aren't used you can control another site's keyword relevance.

You can further limit your liability by doing this with a new domain you control and 301 redirect to the competitor. Then if they do eventually use canonical tags you undo the link building by removing the redirect.

It's nasty business and will likely get you sued if there is real money involved. I still think it is easier and less risky to improve your own standings instead. If you follow my threads at all you'll notice I tell people left and right to use canonical tags to avoid being targeted with these kinds of attacks. Additionally the canonical tags help you get more of your website's pages indexed by google.

i got an amazon review site that got penalized, i suspect it was from excessive backlinking. except in my case i had done a lot of diverse types of links, but all too much at once i think. just some food for thought to support gorang's study here.

You need to buy links. SImple as that.

Go to forums and go to the marketing section and PM people asking to purchase some blogroll links.

It works really fkn well.

Lets keep the case study going just in case. My 2 cents: i once spammed with amr blast made the site go on position 5. Then wanted to amp the amr blast by doing a 70k sb blast(directed to 200 amr links AND the landing page) went to 700 something up to 200 and now at 13. Would suggest a penalty but too soon to say. Also did the same with another site. Keyworda that were at position 1 dropped to 4/5. Again because of huge sb blast. Will post if anything interesting happens

It seems that backlinks velocity is the "keyword" here..but sometimes timing can be hard to grab because you can go slow but if google index many of your backlinks at once that is also considered as "fast"..

Well, actually I tried to keep the link velocity natural by pinging 7500 links everyday in the example of my previous post. For a week or 2. 2 weeks of steady pinged links should've been enough for Google to see it as natural backlinking.

This is something worth to be investigated. It's been about 1 month that I've done a similar test as gorang by the way.

I know I said this case study wasn't going to continue because I now still have a use for the website.

But I thought I should mention that I just created 20-30k comment spam backlinks direct to the site. I used about 5 different comments and 10 different anchor text.

When I use Google.com hemorrhoid symptoms is position 12. I'm trying to keep an eye on that particular keyword as a benchmark.

Word on the street is that it will go down and then bounce back up. We shall see.

PS* I haven't pinged the comments.

DUDE i knew that was going to happen man when I read the first post I was thinking ok this guy is asking people for free backlinks to his site>?

Now the backlinks helped him rank and hes monetizing.

In my book NO MORE case studies to see if backlinks hurt or not. Pretty messed up man.

Hey can I do some "case studies" on my sites too? I want to see if you guys give me thousands of backlinks will it help me.

Man it's been a while since I got pissed but I feel the anger coming. Damn what a crock!

And actually don't stop guys, the op has no right to cancel the damn "case study" I say spam the shit out of his site as much as possible. The case study will be over when WE decide its over.

I think I can devote at least a week of my scrapebox time to this, plus how bout if I go ahead and make 2000 web2.0 sites pointing back as well. I want to see how this "case study" turns out.

OK OK I see that youve already disappeared from google but still my point remains the same.

Dude, I love this idea. Instead of relying on myth and rumors about what google uses to rank, why not test and measure? It seems that you've come to the conclusion that excessive backlinking will hurt the main page, but has less of an effect on the deep pages.

Now the problem is finding the exact variables that affects googles decision...

You're a bit late for this.

And you've totally got the wrong end of the stick.

I just sacrificed one of my websites by building more links than I ever dared to, just to help you guys and learn if it was true or not myself.

By all means, keep building. The rumor is that if you keep building then it will come back, I don't have the resources to do that. But I am still building links to the website for the benefit of you guys.

Don't take him to serious Gorang ;)
He's just pissed off SEO for some various reason.
