Keyword Research the BTB Way

Good read thanks Bass.
I am going to try it.

Btw how do you find the exact match domain? Do you have to check every keyword?

I have a question Greg. What about for local keywords? I'm going insane trying to find keywords with things like "optometrist in NYC" for my clients who are looking for local business. Google's keyword tool doesn't seem to pay attention when input location based keywords, it just reverts to national keywords.

Whatsayyou?

on keywordspy.com:

ny optometrist 2,400

I have 4 sites going in this manner that I started before this thread thanks to BTB and i can tell you that this works.

I then dump those high volume keywords in godaddy's bulk domain name checker to find out any EMD's available to match those keywords. And surprisingly, you will find a few EMD's with high exact searches too.
great idea, hadn't thought of that before, had been using custom scripts which are a bit slow sometimes, i will definitely try that, thanks for the share both yourself and btb! :)

Actually it is both... the reason they are paying more per ad is because the KWs they are targeting harder to rank and thus more expensive.

I just see that as the law of diminishing returns; I know I can get a .80 KW ranked but at what cost?

I could spend a lot of time/energy/money but the return, to me, isn't worth it.

I would rather hit my target KWs with less time/energy/money and grab more of the lower hanging fruit.

A great point to be noted. I didn't understand why you delete kws with .8 or higher and I used to run behind high adwords competition kws but now I got it. A great business mind! Thanks BTB! :)

I'm not 100% positive but I believe that MS is in the download section here.

Great post, many thanks for some expert advice on Keyword research.
Do you do anything else to see what the competition might be, i have been using things like intitle: and inurl: to see how much competition there is for certain words.

I just use the Keyword tool for that... I'm really not that much of an analyst when it comes to some things because I know that if I add a bunch of quality content and backlink that content properly that I'll rank my sites.

Quick question Bass,

When you write your articles (or order them), do you group keywords? Put together 3 or 4 similar keywords, related to the same subject, to be able to write a bigger article (1000 - 2000 words) instead of writing 4 different articles (300 - 500 words)?

No, I just have one KW per article but what you are thinking might not be a bad way to attack a site. I won't because I want a lot of pages on a site as that makes Google happy.

I just went through this again this morning for a new niche I thought of and all I can say is WOW!

Over 2k keywords to sort through based off of 6 root keywords. I still have to sort through the duplicates but I see this ending up well over 1k keywords. The cpc is low but the volume is out of this world. the lowest root keyword search is over 800k with 4 of the root keywords being over 8 million and 1 over 20 million. The kicker is that this niche is global and those are local US numbers.

Saving this for later though. I have to finish the others or at least generate more income from them first.

BTB great ideas on KW research and thoughts on interlinking
thanks for taking the time to put this together

On the local keyword front, go with your gut. How would you search for that business. I find that most of the time there is nothing in adwords but that does not mean the phrase is not searched 100k times per month, it only means that no one is buying ads for that term.

National or state level terms/searches can give yo and idea of what people are looking for.

NY might be a little weird though... LOL

Just kidding, I love NY as long as I don't have to go near the place..:D

I wear the the shoes of a guy born in NY... I may have to send 2 finger Louie to Butte to have a chat with you.

Excellent point.
For instance i was looking up a keyword and it said low competition but when i put the phrase in "keyword" it showed over 2 million results! how is that low competition.
Google adwords tool is ok, but can be deceptive, what other keyword tools software would you recommend?
