Heres my own ten dos in SEO

1. Have your main keyword in the domain name
2. Get your on site SEO right
3. Use H1..H2..H3 Tags on your main keyword
4. Always use Alt description on images (always have a image)
5. Use Text decoration ..Bold..Italic..Underline for you main keyword
6. Have internal links
7. Link to a external site Google likes (Wikipedia) or another authority site.
8. Make sure all external links are no follow. Keep your link juice in house.
9. Have well written articles dont use articles that have been spun and are unreadable
10. Once you have done all that build links sensibly and mix them up social bookmarks, blogs, directories etc.

And as Statix mentioned learn how to do keyword research choose the wrong keyword and you are doomed from the start.

Magpie pretty much has the basics - if you don't build firm foundations and rush the keywords and site a lot of your linkbuilding efforts will be wasted. I've regularly got page 1 results before I've even started linkbuilding - and one was a dating site.

No matter what google changes, it's always going to want good content that answers searchers questions. If you make it obvious-as-feck what your pages are about to google you'll rank. Like I say even in ultra-competitive niches.

DO: be very, very patient with your SEO efforts (the Internet does not equal "instant" when it comes to internet marketing in most cases, especially when you're a newbie)

DON'T: stop reading this website for good information and tips!

I worked on a website for over a year to get to the first places.. I got there and was obviously happy.. then google changed their algo and I lost most of the rankings... all that work for almost nothing.
