When asked: ´What do you do?´ What do you say?

one thing to keep in mind is that "what do you do?" doesn't necessarily have to mean "how do you make money?". to assume such would imply that the most prominent thing you do with your life is working for money, which i suppose is true for most 9-5ers, but doesn't have to be the case with IMers. you could easily just starting talking about other shit you enjoy doing with your time if you don't wanna talk about IM to someone that has no idea what it even is.

"what do you do?"
"i rock and roll all night and party every day" ;)

What you say is true, but the question actually is usually intended as "What do you do for a living?", "What's your career or profession?", or even "How do you make money?"

When people are interested in anything else they'll usually clarify it as "What do you do for fun?", "What's your hobby?", or other similar questions.

I know what you mean though, what you do for a living shouldn't define you're life.

How you make your money is what you do FOR a living, it's not the actual living itself. :cool2:

Yeah that's a good point. I like the way Tim Ferris puts it in the 4 Hour Work Week. I forgot the exact quote, but it was something like "When people ask me what I do, I tell them it depends on the day, sometimes I'm surfing, sometimes I'm relaxing, etc." I'm probably way off with the exact way he put it, but if you've read the book, you know the part I'm referring to :D

Obviously when people ask the question "what do you do?" they mean what do you do to make money, but the question itself is too vague and everyone just interprets it as a question about their career.

I've actually tried just saying "idk, I work out, play video games, and just chill" but then normally they respond with asking what I'm doing for work. I guess there's really no way to avoid the question.

I tell them. I summon fire without flint nor tinder.
Then I tell them I'm an enchanter.
