Do You Get Depressed?

A lot of great advice in this thread but I think my issues are a little deeper than just making a few lifestyle changes and having kids.

I already do weight training 5 days a week and have a loving girlfriend who supports me in anything I do. I start my morning at 6am every day and from that time till lunch, I do the vast majority of my work.

Mokodoki touched on the subject of friends and in all honesty, I don't have many. If I'm really honest with myself, my girlfriend is the only person I spend a lot of time with.

I've always been a bit socially awkward but I'm not sure that's why I'm depressed. I've just never been able to find like-minded individuals to hang out with since finishing high-school. Most guys my age want to discuss sports teams and I couldn't think of anything more boring.

thetvnun, I like your suggestion regarding volunteer work. It might do me some good to help other people in need than just myself. I have never really helped anyone else other than family.

hardybents, I can't picture myself being a dad yet so kids are off the agenda. My girlfriend is also a career woman and having kids just wouldn't work well for her either at this point in time.

blackma, I already train at the gym 5 days a week (first thing in the morning) and it helps to keep me motivated and keep a positive mind as best I can.

dannyhw, I'm not a fan of medication but it's something that needs to be reviewed on a case by case basis. You're right about the cancer analogy but my problem feels like it's something much deeper, it's a general unhappiness.

Thanks for the book recommendations Scotland & rpkrocks, I will check them out and see if it's something that might be able to help.

Sometimes I wish an asteroid would hit earth and throw society into utter chaos. That would be very exciting; a throw back to survival of the fittest.
You know who think like this? Losers who have played too much fallout.

The reality would be that you would probably be the first one to die in such an encounter.

Grow up.

I have really bad depression, and I have to say its a huge stuggle. Everyday feels like a battle to get through. Whenever I start an IM project that goes poorly, or something isnt going right in school, I have a horrible habit of internalizing all of it, and drive myself crazy doing it.

I've been to see psychologists, and sometimes theyve helped, although others havent. I think its a route you can try out if you want to. Its important to just push away from everything and focus on what makes you happy as much as you can.

A general unhappiness can either be caused by your current situation, or it can be a chemical imbalance. If it's situational they'll basically just give you advice on how to deal and see how you go. If you don't progress they might prescribe temporary medication just to give you the boost you need to make the changes you need to.

If you have a chemical imbalance or disorder, it just doesn't make sense to live without medication. They don't usually have bad side effects and the biggest pain in the ass is figuring out which one you actually need.

I have periods when I get depressed and got ZERO motivation to work, and because I work for myself I dont do any work at all when that happens.
When I make a lot of money I got plenty of motivation but when I see the money decrease in my bank account I just lose the motivation. I wish it was the other way around.

"Sometimes I wish an asteroid would hit earth and throw society into utter chaos. That would be very exciting; a throw back to survival of the fittest."

I've been thinking like this also, it would be very interesting if something like that happened and I just could quite working and living the way I do.

Dont get me wrong, I like to work from my home with my sites and I would hate to work for someone else but I just get tired of my life and sometimes I just want to live in a house I build in the middle of the woods and catch fish to eat and grow stuff for a living and not care about anything else. :D

I live in the northern part of the world and I especially feel down when it's cold and snow everywhere. I got plans to move to a warmer country but I need a lot of money before that can be done.

have kids that will give you something to live for.. then get a motorcycle also to get an adrenaline rush.. you will be happy then!

You can explore the deep sea. It's unknown, cheap and dangerous.

For some reason this quote had me rolling around laughing. The deep sea is cheap, eh?!

OP - Count your blessings. You make your world.

Come Here and Hook up with me in City Of Fallen Angels, The girls here keep you happy. Only give some money and you got full service 24h!!!

:beach2:

that's some heavy stuff man. Try to add an extra element in your life, by that i don't mean a responsibility more like a hobby that excites you every time you even think about it.

lol, exactly. The OP laments with a quote 'born too soon to explore Space' but it doesn't seem he would have the courage to actually board a spaceship (or a bathyscaphe for that matter).

ManicMystery, if it is a clinical depression (sleeplessness, reduced appetite), get meds before you endanger yourself. If it isn't, then you're just bored due to materialistic overbundance and that's easily changeable.

Bro honestly I don't think asking a bunch of strangers on an Internet Marketing forum is really going to help you. It sounds like you have some deeper issues that don't come down to simple solutions such as exercise and diet. My recommendation would be to find yourself a good psychologist.

I think you need a rest, vacation, just a week spent outside the internet. Drop your busy shedule for a while, recharge the batteries.

There are moments we all feel down, but think positively. Change your attiture towards things. Instead thinking what you don't have, consider what you have. Be grateful to be who you are and for having what you have.
Just to remind you a story, you all probably know well: "I felt miserable for not having shoes only until I met a guy that didn't have legs."

Every morning when you wake up, open your eyes and be thankful for this day. Remember, each day is a gift. Live it, love it, enjoy it!

Have you heard of Abraham Maslows hierarchy of needs? There are five basic needs.

First comes physiological needs such as food and water.

Then, comes safety. If you live in the middle of war even though you have food to survive, you won't be happy.

Thirdly, comes the need to love and belong. If you have food, water, and safety, you still need friends and family. Otherwise, you'll feel sad.

Now, you also need good esteem which is the fourth level in Maslows hierarchy. Even though you have all the below, you still need to feel good about yourself. So you may have everything in the world, but still feel sad.

Finally, you need to reach self-actualization. Very few people reach this stage in the hierarchy. This is where you do creative things and solve problems. If you have all the below including your esteem there's always room to do the bigger things. So work your way up and never give up. Just remember though, if you never reach the top of this hierarchy, you'll never be truly happy. That's why many people say that rich people aren't happy. They have all the money in the world. They may have been born into a rich family but they never faced conflict and struggles that they endured which gave them esteem they needed. So you have all the money in the world, the fame, power, even love but the only way to gain esteem is to somehow face conflict that allows you to gain it.

I hope this advice helps you. Remember improve your esteem first before aiming for higher goals such as writing a novel or painting contemporary art.

You've got a lot of good advice here, but here's another one for you if you're still reading.

Open yourself up to everyone. Become friends with anyone and everyone. Even if 90% of the people you meet seem like complete idiots to your standards, it's still interesting to find out what makes them happy. Sometimes you discover things that you would have never thought of, and sometimes it comes from the most simple minded hillbilliy. Do the whole college thing where you meet people, chill with them one evening, and if they're to your liking, keep in touch, otherwise, just move on.

Rubbish it's 1 word to all good chicken soldiers! Didn't you know that "logic" is an atheist trick to fool you sad non believers!

But seriously, I understand the OP, just a poor place to talk about it... welcome to the modern human race though OP! So much bad advise in this thread... from hump bibles to have kids. NONE of those empty things will ever fill the void that modern society forces upon us all. You want to live properly then you have to separate from the sheep heard, bottom line. I hope that helps you to conquer this depression OP, I know it helped me when I went through your age and the same feeling!

that's two words.

this is your real problem...

sorry to say this..

but you ARE LACKING A SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM...
and its causing you to undergo a depression....
you need to reach out and make real friends...
don't be too picky...
I HATE SPORTS.. but i have tons of friends that love them
and they talk about sports all freakin day...
but they also talk about other things...
and that is why i enjoy their company.

look for friends..... NOT CLONES OF YOU.

STOP pondering the meaning of life... you are under qualified
go study philosophy for 10 years then ponder that question..
if my plumber would say... i was thinking of how a nuclear device works..
I would tell him.... shut the fuck up and go unclog my toilet..

so I will tell you....STFU and go sell some ringtones or whatever you are good at..

also.... let me shed some light on your apocalyptic fantasy..
you want an asteroid to smash the earth and bring things back to
survival of the fittest....
you and like every other IM that I know are probably somewhat of a NERD..
once this asteroid hits... there will be no order....
everybody will fight for themselves...

FROM WHAT I REMEMBER...
NERDS REALLY NEVER HAVE BEEN PLACED AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN...
it is very likely that nerds will be someones bitch.....
just like it happens in prison... the white collar guys end up as bitches...

so give up that illusion of being the warrior, just because
on a laptop you can sell a bunch of people some bullshit product from clickbank...

THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU THE FITTEST.....

Well, I posted this on here because I figured perhaps it might be common amongst people who work online. We're often isolated and work alone for countless hours on end.

I read every response, so thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and feelings with me :)

Reading what you wrote I personally notice a social circle problem.
How often do you go out? do you have close friends? what about women?

This really looks like a Social problem and nothing else.

I do.

Quite a lot actually and it impacts on my ability to work as well as my motivation. I'm not talking about the teenage blues either, I'm in my late 20's and past all the minor issues (in hindsight) that bother you when you're in your teens.

We live in very interesting times but there is very little in the way of challenges. I read a quote once that stated

That describes exactly how I feel.

I'm a huge fan of Horatio Hornblower (books and T.V. series based on the life of a Navy officer) but I know I will never experience the thrill of discovering an unknown land and risking life and limb in the process.

Sometimes I wish an asteroid would hit earth and throw society into utter chaos. That would be very exciting; a throw back to survival of the fittest.

I've done some traveling, so it's not like I need to get out more but the problem is you already know what to expect. Planning a holiday? You can get an idea of where you're going by watching videos on Youtube and reading about the experiences of other people online to the point it almost feels like you've been there yourself.

I earn my living online, I have always had a roof over my head and there has never been a day that I have gone hungry. My lot in life is better than 99% of the other people who call this planet their home.

I'm not suicidal but I often wonder what the point of life is and I always conclude that life has no point. Some what nihilistic but then I want to know why life has no point. In the end, I guess it's all about the biological urge to procreate but that doesn't make me feel any better.
