Newbie question about "anchor text"

Hi all..I am trying to build some backlinks using .edu and .gov sites. I take it the standard method is to use what I believe is called "anchor text"? Is that correct? I am not completely sure what that is- is it like where the reader sees a phrase which is actually a link? I have seen some like that on these blogs..you see one phrase but when you mouse over it shows a hidden link?

How do I go about doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is html for anchor test.

Alternatively on blogs they ask you for your name (your keyword phrase) and your website (your url) and it will appear
like you describe on your initial post.

I tried it but not sure if it's going to work on this site. My post shows on my screen but says it is awaiting moderation so I'm unsure if the formatting only show up then or what.

For keyword I just put my name.

Anchor text is something that defines your site or the subject matter your site addresses. for example, if i had a site that offered cheap hosting and my company was xyzforprofit_dot_net, some sample anchor tags would be:

<a href='xyzforprofit_dot_net'>cheap hosting</a>
<a href='xyzforprofit_dot_net'>XYZ for Profit</a>
<a href='xyzforprofit_dot_net'>great deals</a>

example within text would be:

If you're looking for <a href='xyzforprofit_dot_net'>cheap hosting</a>, choose <a href='xyzforprofit_dot_net'>XYZ for Profit</a>. They offer <a href='xyzforprofit_dot_net'>great deals</a> on rock solid site hosting!

That raises some questions for me. If I'm getting this correctly, the purpose of doing this is to get a link on a high PR site, .edu or .gov maybe, to get noticed by google but not be overt about it. So if I'm using my keyword in the anchor text isn't that defeating the purpose? If I'm going to be overt, why not just put a direct link to my site in there?

There's nothing sneaky or overt about anchor text.. it's actually the preferred way to link to other sites. (unless your trying to punch out a thousand links on one page! :footinmou)

Can someone show me a good example of a backlink using anchor text? Either post a link or PM one to me. It doesn't have to be your own- I just want to see a good working example of what an effective one looks like on an actual site.

Look for the words "courier service" and "small business ideas"

That is anchor text.

Ok thanks. Would an article like that typically be spun and submitted? I would assume so since writing articles can be pretty time consuming.

Sure you can spin that article and submit it to other sites... that is what I typically do.

One more question, please. Someone mentioned another site having x number of backlinks. How does one go about determining that about someone else's site?
