You can try getting traffic from social networking sites like facebook / twitter and video sharing site like youtube. If you can maintain good traffic daily, your SERP will naturally get better in a month or so you'll be seeing increasing traffic from search engines.

There are many ways to get links and banners from other sites - just make sure they put the nofollow tag so you don't get any aggro from G. Search forums such as this one for advertsing.

A note of warning though. Using this method I increased traffic to my sales site by 20 times! However no real increase in sales - because the sites are not on theme.

When the site is appearing at #1 for less searched KW, how can it have more visits? All the high searched keywords get HUGE number of visitors if the site appears at #1

The best way to increase your site's traffic is through backlinking , link exchanges, social bookmarking. Also submitting your sitemap to various search engines..... also you must have a large bunch of data stored in ur site so as to get more results on various search engines......
