Anyone using Wikis for backlinks?

I have used the search function but could not find any relevant thread.

I was wondering if anyone over here is using Wikis for backlinks?
I figured that backlinks from Wiki articles should be of a good value due to the following reasons:

- If you post links in articles related to your niche, the backlink is 1) within the actual content and 2) on a niche related page
- Wikis usually have kind of an authority due to their nature
- There should not be that much outbound links on a wiki page

I might be totally wrong but I am thinking this is worth going after. I was doing it manually and found that many links get removed, but some stick. So it's a numbers game, just like blog comments or forum profiles.

Now: is there any tool to automate this backlinks? While building them manually, I found many blogs let you edit an article without registration. Those who require registration, very often have no captchas and/or email verification.

I'm curious about your point of views.

Depends on the Wiki. The actual Wikipedia is do-follow as well as most of the other wikis using the very same engine (Wikimedia).

I'm not only talking about wikipedia.com, but about all wikis out there. Sure, one link from the wikipedia.com is powerful, but if you link to a BH site it most probably will get removed within minutes from another author.

And that is why you need to know how to do that... Not many people know that and the ones that know will not share this. Just try to figure it by yourself...

Other Wikis are ok but I would say - keyword is a keyword in that case...

I could show the ones I've built manually but don't want some douchebag to see my website/niche and remove my link. ;-)

A link is a link whether its no-follow or do-follow. It's been proven that no-follow links count towards rankings.

I agree with you Sprouts; it's often misunderstood! Nofollow does not pass PR but yes, it does help to improve rankings!

I was about to say the same, but left it out eventually because I didn't want the thread to become a do-follow no-follow discussion.

On nofollow, all I will say is that it hasn't been proven that nofollow links aid serps. Wikipedia is a possible exception.

I use wikis very often, and wikipedia is just one of so many varieties out there.

They are not fundamentally different from other sites. You get a bonus because your link is in the main content, but Google knows the whole point of wikis is that anybody can edit them so it may score them down for that.

Most wikis are nofollow (mediawiki) but there are many that do not have the nofollow tag. My favorite wikis are located on .gov and .edu sites, and they are commonly found on well-known .edu sites.

I've done it on wiki sites, not wikipedia, that aren't moderated. You can even make your own pages.

I have wikipedia link back to one of my sites. This site is PR3 with only 8 backlinks to it including the wikipedia link. The other sites linking back to it have weak PR. Not sure what is happening here but all I know is I won't be removing that link back just because it is nofollow.

I made experiment :

Wikipedia.org backlink = non indexed website showed up at 11 spot with no other backlinks within few hours.
Wikipedia.org backlink was removed = website disappear after 3-4 days...

My Wikipedia backlink was in actual content - not as source backlink...

Although I strongly believe that nofollow links have value this does not prove much of anything. New sites tend to shoot to the top of search engines then in a few days move back to their appropriate spot.

wowhaxor - i think website with no backlinks cant rank without the reason 11 for very difficult keyword with 300K exact searches...

I've got a bunch of links on wikipedia... I am pretty sure they are no follow but I do get targeted traffic from those links.
