Is Broken Link Building still an effective white hat SEO in 2026?

My team was doing broken link building five years ago, and even back then it was already not working.
Broken link building was effective before Ahrefs added this feature to their platform. After that, thousands of link builders started spamming websites everywhere, and this method eventually stopped being as effective as it used to be.

Fair point , tools made it way too easy and people overdid it. Now it’s hit or miss.

I think it depends more on the quality than the tactic itself. Editorial backlinks from relevant and trusted websites can still be valuable over the long term, but only when they make sense naturally within the content. I'd always choose a few genuinely relevant mentions over a large number of links that exist only for SEO.

I agree. Guest posting still works when it's done on relevant, high quality websites. The focus should be on earning genuine editorial links and reaching the right audience, not just collecting backlinks.

IMO, broken link building still holds up in 2026 if you do it right. It's not about blasting outreach emails anymore it's about genuinely finding dead resources in your niche and offering something better to replace them. The trick now is quality over quantity. Sites are way more picky about what they link to, so your replacement content needs to actually add value, not just exist. If you're doing mass outreach with templated emails, you're probably getting ignored or landing in spam.

So yeah, still white hat, still works but only if you treat it like relationship building rather than a numbers game.

i believe that they are valuable. however, the whole idea of backllinks has undergone changes. everyone wants to build backlinks nd forgets y they were built to begin with. when the content is valuable nd ppl want to refer to it bcz it is valuable then this is where SEO value comes in. it is easy to play with the numbers when buildiing random backlinks but it will not get u far.

Yes, but only if you do it at scale with quality. Broken link building still works because you're providing value to site owners while earning relevant editorial links. The challenge today isn't the strategy it's finding good opportunities and getting webmasters to respond.
