Hello

Most SEO discussions eventually come back to backlinks.

Whether it was outreach, guest posts, authority or link building as links are usually a big part of the conversation but what if Google suddenly stopped using backlinks as a ranking factor?

What would be the first thing you'd focus on instead? Search intent, topical authority, content quality, user experience, branding or something else?

curious to know what people think would have the biggest impact on rankings if backlinks were completely removed from the equation.

I think I'd put most of my effort into creating genuinely useful content that fully answers what people are searching for. I'd also focus on building topical authority, making the site fast and easy to use, and growing a brand that people actually remember.

If backlinks disappeared, Google would still need other ways to measure trust, so content quality, user experience and brand reputation would probably become even more important.

i’d probably start with intent and retention signals. if links were gone, pages that actually solve the query and keep users from bouncing back would matter a lot more.

My first question would be: what replaces backlinks? If Google removes them completely, how will it differentiate between two websites covering the same topic with similar-quality content?

I think people underestimate how useful backlinks are as a trust signal. If they disappear, Google would need a much stronger replacement than just "better content."

Personally, I'd shift my focus to building communities and brand reputation. Even now, I spend around 30% of my SEO efforts helping clients build their brand presence within communities, although it's very time-consuming. If backlinks were removed, that would probably become the biggest part of my SEO strategy.

If backlinks disappeared tomorrow, Id probably just focus 100% on topical authority and matching search intent.

Focus on main page, supporting pages around it, and strong internal links so bots can easily understand what the website is about.

Brand/entity signals would matter more too imo. Citations, reviews, branded searches, social profiles, author/about pages, etc

But I don’t think backlinks will ever fully go away tho. Google still needs some kind of outside trust signal. I just think weak/spammy links will keep getting easier to ignore.

If backlinks disappeared tomorrow, I'd just focus almost entirely on satisfying search intent and creating content that's genuinely more useful than what's already ranking. My advice is to spend more time understanding what users actually want instead of chasing algorithms, because that tends to hold up even when ranking factors change. A fast, easy-to-use site would be my next priority.

If backlinks were no longer a ranking factor, I'd put most of my effort into understanding search intent and building strong topical authority. Publishing helpful, in-depth content that genuinely answers users' questions, combined with a fast, user friendly website, would likely make the biggest difference in search rankings.

If Google stopped using backlinks, I'd spend my time creating content that truly answers what people are searching for and building strong topical authority around my niche. I'd also invest more in user experience and brand trust, because those are the things that keep visitors engaged and coming back.

Best is Create creating genuinely useful content google recommend your content Content Quality + E-E-A-T and Brand trust option like Quora, Reddit

brand signals and direct/branded search volume, that's the hardest thing to fake without real authority

I would definitely work more on the quality of content I produce.

I'd focus on building a site search people search for buy name

I'd spend more time understanding search intent and building content that genuinely answers users questions a fast well structured site with a good user experience would become even more important

Content quality alone isn't enough. I'd prioritize search intent, UX, and strong topical coverage. Those would probably carry the most weight without backlinks.

It would definitely change the game, but not kill SEO. I'd focus on becoming an authority in one niche through consistent publishing, topical relevance, and building trust with users.

If backlinks disappeared tomorrow, I'd put even more focus on creating content that genuinely helps users and answers their questions. I'd also invest more in improving user experience, building topical authority, and growing a recognizable brand. Those are long-term assets that remain valuable regardless of algorithm changes.

If backlinks disappeared tomorrow then i would spend more time building content around complete topics instead of individual keywords. I would also focus on making the site easy to navigate and creating content that people actually return to. Those are things that add value regardless of how google ranks pages.

Seo would shift to on-page only search intent match, content quality, topical authority, internal linking & user engagement signals, without backlinks, ranking would depend on how well the page satisfies user

That's why i always rely more on content strategizing and optimization with proper topical clusters and internal linking. Creating backlinks are always secondary factors for me.
