Can a site hold top positions without building new links?

I've noticed a strange pattern. In SEO, everyone seems obsessed with getting to the top. But once a site gets there, everyone's strategy is different. Some SEOs continue building links every month. Others completely forget about it and just edit their content. I'm genuinely curious. How long can a site actually hold its positions without building new links? Does it depend more on the niche or on how strong a profile it's already built? Has anyone ever stopped building links, but competitors continued, and you simply plummeted?

From my experience, rankings don't usually drop because you stopped building links. They drop because competitors didn't stop.

this is a complicated question but to put it simply if you are in a niche that's not competitive then yes, you dont really need to keep building links and if you stop building links that doesn't mean you will no longer hold top positions.

Real experience: I own two sites, both in the automotive niche, one is a service site and the other is a blog with reviews.
The first one had a lot invested into building the backlink profile. Then, because of personal circumstances, I stopped investing in it, but it still holds a good level among competitors, even with very little content updating.
The second one I am growing only with fresh and relevant content, without serious investment into links, only SEO and social media. And it also has good positions, and the metrics are growing.
So I think links can help at the start so that you get noticed, then comes authority building, and after that fresh and relevant information can help keep rankings stable, even without major investment into new links.

Yes, but with a couple of very clear conditions and only if you already have a solid foundation, once your site has good authority and a decent link profile, it can maintain top rankings for a long time without you building any new links, it's like a building, once the foundation is firm, you don't need to keep adding floors to prevent it from collapsing.

However, this only works if no one else is challenging your position, the problem is that if your competitors keep building new and fresh links, they will eventually overtake you, google interprets these new links as signs that the site is still active and relevant, if you remain stagnant, your link profile becomes static and eventually devalues, while everyone else's is constantly being updated, another way to stay on top without new links is by creating such good and up to date content that google puts you on a pedestal simply for the value you provide to users, if your page is the best answer to a search and people don't need to look any further, user signals can sustain your position for a good while.

the main reason you will fall from the top is because the competition never sleeps, you always need to be working on new content, new strategies, and keeeping up with the latest developments. For example, there are now strategies to optimize your site so it appears inside AI discussions

I think it depends a lot on the niche and competition. If a site already has a stronger backlinks profile and keeps updating content, it can probably hold ranking for quite a while without building new links.

But in highly competitive niches, I would expect competitors to slowly overtake it if the keep acquiring quality links.

If you're in a niche with low or medium competition then yes it's possible. High competition niches need A LOT and high quality backlinks.
