Hey everyone
I recently increased my PPC budget by 50%, but right after that my CPA almost doubled.

Before increasing the budget, my campaigns were stable and I was getting consistent results, but as soon as I scaled the spend, performance dropped and cost per acquisition went much higher.

I’m trying to understand what could cause this kind of sudden change. Is it normal for CPA to spike when increasing budget, or does it indicate an issue with targeting, bidding, or campaign structure?

Any help or insights from your experience would be really appreciated

Check your Placements breakdown to see if the budget is being dumped into the Audience Network or low-converting video segments.

hey, I believe to get smoother results you don't have to raise your campaign budget by 50% at one time.
Make it slow adding 20% and look on how cpa changes.
If you get results what you need - raise for 20% more and so on.

i agree with this this you have to gradually increase the budget

Instead of leaving the cost per click unchecked, fix it to a specific amount and set a limit; when Google Ads decides this on its own, you can really get some absurd data.

I agree with you, this usually happens when scaling too fast pushes your ads into less efficient auctions. When you increased budget, the platform likely expanded delivery beyond your best-performing audience segments, which raises CPA.

Scaling too fast usually pushes the algo into colder traffic, try increasing budget gradually instead of jumping 50%.

Completely normal, when you increase budget too fast the algorithm exits its learning phase and starts bidding on lower quality traffic to spend the extra budget, always scale max 20-30% every 7 days, never jump 50% at once or your CPA will spike every time.

When you increase budget too fast, Google often expands reach into colder traffic. That's usually why CPA jumps instead of staying stable.

Could also be learning phase instability. Sometimes after a big budget jump, the algorithm start testing completely different auction pockets and traffic behavior changes for a few days.

Yep, totally normal when you scale too fast, bigger budget usually pushes the algorithm into new, less efficient audience segments, so CPA spikes until it learns. Try scaling 10-20% at a time and let it stabilize.

Your lower budget only targeted the easiest, highest-converting users. The 50% increase forced the algorithm to target less-qualified people who are much more expensive to convert.

This is a common situation. Whenever I increased my budget whilst running app download ads, the cost per download also went up; I suppose there’s no way around it.

yeah thats normal sometimes, more budget can make ads spend on expensive clicks and CPA go up a bit

when you increase budget suddenly, Google or any ad platform tries to spend the extra money quickly, so it expands beyond your “best performing” auctions and starts showing ads in broader, more competitive or lower intent searches

that extra traffic is usually less qualified, so conversion rate drops while cost per click often goes up, which together makes CPA spike

basically your original setup was optimized for a smaller, tighter audience, and scaling too fast breaks that balance
slow scaling lets the algorithm adjust and find efficient pockets again/

I've had the same issue before,
When you increase budget too aggressively, the platform often starts reaching less qualified traffic, so a higher CPA isn't that surprising.
