Old pages got deindexed after being indexed before, what do you guys do with them

Had a few pages that were indexed before, even got some traffic, then suddenly dropped out of index.

Not sure if i should update them, redirect, or just leave them. Feels like something off with signals or maybe internal linking

what do you usually do in this case?

It is important to identify the cause first.

Since you have multiple pages, you can experiment.

But honestly we just had Spam update and Core update is in progress.
This might as well be something on their end and all you have to do is wait a bit.

google has been aggressively purging older inactive pages from the index lately to save on their crawl budget. definitely do not just leave them hanging there as dead weight. if the topic still has decent search volume, rewrite a few paragraphs to freshen it up, blast a few new internal links to it from your highest-traffic posts, and hit request indexing in gsc. if the content is just thin or totally outdated now, just 301 redirect it to a related pillar page so you at least consolidate whatever link juice it had left.

I have noticed similiar pattern on one website and in my case - the posts that got hit had rather thin content without sources or any citations. So my 2 cents about it would be - if your posts are important and beneficial to the main base of your website - update them and request re-indexing. If not - 301 them.

In this case, I usually don’t leave it as is. First, I update the content and improve quality. Then I add better internal links and check if similar pages are competing. If the page has no value, I may redirect it. Otherwise, improving signals usually helps reindexing.

I usually start by updating the content and improving it with fresh info. Check internal links and make sure they’re still relevant.

If it’s outdated or low value, I either merge it with a stronger page or 301 redirect it. Leaving it alone rarely helps.

Look at what has replaced them in the SERPs - the intent may have shifted. Eg if a blog post has been replaced with UGC or a YT video, turn your blog post into a video.

If pages were indexed before and now show “crawled, currently not indexed”, it’s almost always a quality/trust issue, not technical.

Google already saw your pages and decided they are not worth keeping in the index. Forcing indexing won’t fix it.

– Add some real backlinks/trust signals
– Make content clearly better than competitors

Once Google sees higher value, pages usually get reindexed when crawled again. Otherwise they will keep getting dropped again.

If pages dropped after being indexed it usually means google re-evaluated them as low value
Refresh the content strengthen internal links and check for duplicate intent before redirecting because redirects too early can waste pages that are still recoverable

I usually check if the content still meets search intent first. If it's outdated, a quick refresh with new info and some fresh internal links usually gets it back in the index. If it’s thin, redirecting to a stronger page is the way to go.

Happens a lot lately, usually a signal or quality issue. I’d start by updating the content improving internal links, and making sure it actually matches search intent.

If it still doesn’t come back then either merge it into a stronger page or just let it go instead of forcing it.

Really helpful advice. I've handled older blogs dropped in rankings this way before. It's proven to be effective. I'll try it again to see how it goes

Do just 3 things.

1. Update the content with latest information out there.
2. Make a proper intent based internal linking
3. Request reindexin through GSC.

And then update us about the result.

If your pages getting dropped in the index, your content quality is not good. Google is doing a great job nowadays in deindexing basic content, its like they are trying to optimize the cost.

For the solution part, no solution, even if you mange to get them indexed again, they will be dropped again. I have tested this. Better way is to create heavy pages with interlinking. Plus make sure your title is good, ctr also playing a great role nowadays.

Yeah, when a page drops, I’d refresh it a bit—update the angle, add fresh examples, drop in some internal links from high‑traffic posts. If it’s still thin, 301 it to a stronger page. Don’t chase indexing hacks; make the page genuinely useful and it’ll come back naturally.

It is not necessary that the fault here is in quality of your blog. There is another possibility here that some good blogspot has replaced your site because it way better than your blog post.
