you basically go to settings in search bar write "delete" and you have 2 choices "deactivate" and "delete"

you can delete your instgram account from account center. also once account delete messages remains but it will not show your name. it will only says user.

You can delete your account but you cannot fully delete all messages you’ve already sent from other people’s inboxes.

Deleting your Instagram account removes your profile, but messages you sent stay in other users’ inboxes.
There’s no way to fully delete or recall sent messages from everyone.
Only unsent messages disappear, and only if you unsend them manually.

It's interesting to see the results of these experiments, and it seems like the consensus is that deleting your Instagram account won't remove messages from other users' inboxes. I'd like to add that this is similar to how other social media platforms handle message deletion, where the recipient can still see the message even if the sender's account is gone. Has anyone tried using Instagram's "unsend" feature to see if it removes the message from both sides, or is that only effective if the message was sent very recently?

I have done that experiment in the past. Maybe the messages were flagged.

Unfortunately, deleting the profile doesn't clear the DMs on their end. You have to unsend them manually or use an automation script first. Has anyone found a script that still works in 2026 without hitting the 403 errors?

Long press the message you sent; it will show an option to "delete the message". Keep in mind, the user might have already seen it; but you can remove it from both your chats.
