Instagram deletion (messages)

you can delete your instgram account from account center. also once account delete messages remains but it will not show your name. it will only says user.

You can delete your account but you cannot fully delete all messages you’ve already sent from other people’s inboxes.

You can delete your Instagram account from Settings → Accounts Center → Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
Maybe you can not delete the message you sent.

as a small experiment you can create a random profile and text yourself and delete this account so you will see the result

Deleting your IG account will remove your profile and messages from your side, but messages already sent may still stay in other users’ inboxes. There’s no way to fully delete messages from both sides.

If you already sent the message, the message will still be visible.

All messages I've got from my friend are not available to read because he deleted his account, just for mini experiment you can try to create a new IG page and text yourself and then delete the page. Let me know about your result.

There’s no way to fully delete or recall sent messages from everyone.
Only unsent messages disappear, and only if you unsend them manually.

It's interesting to see the results of these experiments, and it seems like the consensus is that deleting your Instagram account won't remove messages from other users' inboxes. I'd like to add that this is similar to how other social media platforms handle message deletion, where the recipient can still see the message even if the sender's account is gone. Has anyone tried using Instagram's "unsend" feature to see if it removes the message from both sides, or is that only effective if the message was sent very recently?

I have done that experiment in the past. Maybe the messages were flagged.

Unfortunately, deleting the profile doesn't clear the DMs on their end. You have to unsend them manually or use an automation script first. Has anyone found a script that still works in 2026 without hitting the 403 errors?

Long press the message you sent; it will show an option to "delete the message". Keep in mind, the user might have already seen it; but you can remove it from both your chats.

I deleted my Instagram account through the settings, but the messages I had already sent were not.
