The account with a 5 letter username I want changed his username to a random "user9410az" etc. I guess he is planning to transfer it over to his other account or sell it to someone???

I know after you change your username, no one can take it for 14 days but why is it that when I type that username to change it to it, it shows an error of "This username is not available for use on instagram."
I tested out with my backup account and usually it should give an error note of "this username was used by someone else in the past 14 days. Please try another."

The account (except no longer 5 letter username, from 5 letter to "user9410az") still exists. I know its him because I have dm'd him (although he never responded) everyday and i see the username is changed. if he was banned for using that username, i feel like his whole account would be taken down, but it didnt.

Or is this a reserve by instagram?

Instagram often keeps short/rare usernames in reserve, so even if the other person changes their name, you will still see the “This username is not available” error instead of being reopened after 14 days.

hmmm... do you have any idea why that user would change their username? that acc with the rare username was a brand new fresh account with no post or photos, never replied when i asked to buy it, and then they let that go????

This five-letter username is currently showing as "unavailable." It's likely that Instagram has reserved or frozen it, rather than having it registered by someone else.

The other person's account wasn't blocked; they simply changed their name.

Short usernames are a sensitive resource, and Instagram often protects them to prevent resale.

So even if you wait 14 days, you likely won't be able to get one.

oh whattttt? why would they do that if someone was able to claim it though?? i thought once you claim it, its yours unless you willingly change it

I have encountered the same situation. Usually IG will keep the username for a while to avoid spam, but there is still a chance that it will reopen after the expiration date. Just follow it regularly, don't miss it when it becomes available again, there is still a chance to get it.

what do you mean by "expiration date"?

Instagram often holds usernames after a change to prevent quick grabs. That “not available” error is likely them reserving it. Your guess about him keeping it for transfer or sale sounds right.

The username is in the grace period. You will the complete 14 day timer to go through before you can get that username, even if your using the same account.

The username is likely reserved by Instagram after the change. It could be blocked due to being flagged or a temporary restriction. Try again after 14 days or contact Instagram support for more info.

Looks like the username is being “parked” — either Instagram is holding it in a hidden cooldown or the owner is prepping a transfer. The different error message usually means IG has locked that handle temporarily, not released it yet. If you’re eyeing it, best bet is to keep checking, but don’t be surprised if it never actually drops. Have you tried monitoring it with a username checker bot?

The "unavailable" error you are encountering is due to Instagram holding that username for a 14-day grace period. This mechanism is set up to prevent username hijacking immediately after the previous owner changes it, while also allowing them to transfer or sell it.

It simply was withheld by instagram so someone else won't have the opportunity of using it due to reasons best known to them
