Totally agree, exact match anchors are still one of the fastest ways to trip an algo filter in 2025. Google’s way better at spotting manipulative link profiles now.
I usually keep my mix like this:
- Branded / Brand + keyword → strongest foundation, builds trust.
- Partial match / topical anchors → keeps relevance without screaming “SEO.”
- Generic (“click here”, “read more”) + naked URLs → balances things out and mimics organic linking.
- Occasional long-tail anchors → blends keyword relevance with natural phrasing.
Main thing for me is
variance. If the profile looks like it would happen naturally (different sites, contexts, anchor styles), it holds up way better long term.
What I’m curious about is whether you’re also adjusting based on
link source type (guest post vs. niche edit vs. citation), or do you keep the same distribution across the board?
