Still, not even twins are equal in everything, so there's no such thing as equality when it comes to humans / societies (if that's what you're referring to). Between machines sure, there is equality. But you gotta specify what you're referring to

It’s actually from a manga I’ve been reading got me thinking about how a lot of psychological thrillers and 'genius' characters in fiction tend to share this same perspective. I was curious if people see any truth to it outside of fiction, or if it’s just an edgy trope writers love to recycle

Yeah, you nailed it. I was mainly referring to humans and societies the classic equality debate. I agree, even nature itself isn’t fair, so why would society magically be? Just thought it was worth throwing out there since people still argue over it like it’s something you can ever fully achieve.

I agree that equality can be viewed as a fantasy, much like the idea that life is inherently fair.

However, I believe this issue still needed to be addressed in certain areas. For example, the origins of feminism (not referring to pseudo-feminism, of course) were grounded in the fight for women's equal rights. Similarly, many marginalized communities that have been oppressed for centuries deserve a chance at equality. In these cases, striving for equality doesn't hinder meritocracy; rather, it allows these groups to have the same chances and be on a level playing field with others.

I see your point, and I completely agree that certain marginalized communities and movements like feminism have fought for necessary rights and equal opportunities. But for me, the idea of equality often feels a bit idealistic, especially when looking at systemic issues. What’s more important, in my view, is equity, where everyone gets what they truly need to succeed, rather than just giving everyone the same thing and calling it even. It’s about leveling the playing field in a way that accounts for the different starting points we all have. Sometimes, striving for equality can miss the mark if it doesn’t account for the differences in people’s backgrounds and struggles.
