I received a COD (Cash on Delivery) order on my e-commerce store. Since I had no issues with COD in the past, I shipped it without concern. A few days later, I noticed I hadn't received an order confirmation, so I checked the status and it was RTO (Return to Origin). The reason? "Customer didn’t pick up the call. After three failed attempts, we are returning the item."

Since COD orders are often ignored, I wanted to confirm this with the customer. When I called him, I was shocked by his response....he said he had received the order, had been using it for two days, and loved it!

I then asked him to share the transaction details so I could follow up with my courier partner. He replied, "I paid in cash." That’s when everything became clear.

Here’s what happened:
  1. The customer placed a COD order.
  2. He paid cash to the delivery agent and received the product.
  3. The courier agent falsely marked the order as undelivered, filed it for RTO, and sent a fake parcel back to me. (When I opened it, it was not what I had sent)
I’m not concerned about the financial loss, but I’m furious about the scam. I have uploaded all proof, call recordings with the customer, images of him receiving the order, and pictures of the fake item I got in the RTO.

Hopefully this all gets resolved, they'll always find a way... :(

The scam is ingenious. But filthy! Hope you get your money !

that delivery boy is probably gone
That is a clever scam
on the contrary, it's one of the dumbest types of scams because receptionists will always see that the returned product is not what it's been shipped. Plus the fact that everything's recorded and registered into the system, so you can't fool anyone with this scam. That delivery boy was either too stupid, or too desperate for money (probably because the delivery company is not paying him enough to live)

It’s not just him there are so many others doing the same thing, ripping off multiple sellers like me. And it's happening on such a massive scale too! That's insane!

Let’s see what response I get from the courier partner. They’ll likely try to put this on me because if it gets cleared, they’d have to pay for it out of their own pocket.

I highly doubt he’s gone because he even used the same label I sent. It was a COD, and that was clearly mentioned on the label, so he probably took advantage of that. He’ll likely try to save himself by saying this is what he got from his dispatch team.

I would love to see the result of this 'appeal'. Why would they stoop so low to carry out such a scam? Now, you may not work with them anymore.

Scams like these are just so frustrating. I too have some scam stories which I will share soon someday with you guys.

Happened to me also but using Amazon. Ordered a camera and the delivery guy called asking for password. (Don't know how he got the number).
Then he marked as delivered but never did it. I gave password because I wasn't home and I didnt have this issues before.
Good thing is that I have a great history on Amazon purchases so I received a refund. Other new users never get this because they give the password.

So basically, I’ve tied up with an aggregator platform where I can enter the pickup and drop addresses, and it shows me prices from different courier partners. One more crazy thing, the courier partner I selected was Amazon. I’ll never choose them for COD again.

Please do share those stories here; we’ll definitely learn from them.

Over here we have organised gangs in cars and bikes that tail delivery vans and pick parcels from customer gardens and porches once they have been dropped off. Of course many customers first reaction up on being told it was delivered is to leave the sender a negative review. Especially when delivery drivers decide to self-sign or don’t even knock to see if anyone is home. Which is more often the case than not these days. A lot of people say delivery drivers are often in on it in which case it becomes a scam, but who knows.

The aggregator thing is actually an excellent service, helps you save on delivery but it's bad some take advantage of the system to scam.

This scam is anything but clever. It's just theft and forgery. The delivery boy does this a few times and they are fired. If it happens once or twice, they might manage to shift the blame. But if it happens a third time, even the most gullible manager would be on their case. Even the worst job in the world in not worth losing in such a way as their employer would likely also dock their pay. On top of this, as this is an actual crime, the consequences might actually be severe if enough people decide to be Karens overly principled about it.

I expect that you'll get your money from the company, but the time wasted on this is irreversibly down the drain.

Sure, man! I'll update the thread once I hear back from the support team.

If everything is recorded on camera, what happens next? Will they receive a refund?

Yes, I'm not blaming the platform (just blaming it for wasting my time), but the real culprits are the delivery agents.

Totally agree with you. The most important thing I've lost here is not money, but my time and peace of mind.

I agree with this as well. He could only get away with it a few times before being fired. I’d say it's not worth it, morally or economically, since the amount involved wasn't life-changing.

that really sucks, hope they can make him pay, for what he did I mean not money at this point but more about he paying for his actions, I knew this was common in food delivery but this is another level now.
