A few questions about expired domains & finding them

Hey. I've been wondering a few things.. First of all, I've been thinking about making a site, and for SEO reasons I obviously want high-PR backlinks. Someone suggested to find expiring domains with high PRs and simply buy those, and then link them to the main site. Now, here goes my questions:

1) Is it worth it to buy expiring domains with high PR just to have them link to my money site?

2) How do I find those?

3) Is there anything else I should know when buying them? Are the costs different depending on the PR, etc.? Is there anything special I should do to make sure they keep their PR when they're transferred to me?

4) Would it be worth it to make / does anyone else need a tool that searches for expiring domains? I'm sure I could make something in Java, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel, if something like it already exists.

5) Am I wasting my time with this method? I would obviously think that buying a good domain with like 1000 backlinks saves a lot of time compared to just setting up a Web-2.0 site and starting to slowly blast it with links.. But I don't know.

6) Anything else I should know / think of when doing this?

Any answers would be really appreciated :)

IMHO buying expired domains negates their pre-acquired SEO benifits (how hard is it to query the Whois Database). Over time these may return however I have never based a strategy upon expired domains.

Work liek everyone else, find a niche and work to earn it.

There are no long term shortcuts.

Okay.. So it's not worth it at all? Do they lose 100% of the previous SEO Benefits? Also, how expensive are they, is it just like buying a new domain? 10$ish?

Anyone else who wants to state their opinion?
 
Ya, price is exactly the same as buying a new domain.

I don't think they have any SEO value, however they may have some click through and type in traffic.

They most certainly do not lose all of their SEO value. Aged and expired domains can be salvaged and retain most of their value if you know what you're doing.

Really.... Do you actually think that Google is actually stupid enough to assign the same SEO value to a domain post expiration as it would have on a renewal. If they do not they should. I can not see why Google would be assigning a high value to a domain that was bought in a virtual 'fire sale'. And inf act I will ask Matt Cutts shortly.

You must admit, though, that if you do 20k backlinks to www.site.com and it expires, someone else picks it up.. There's still going to be 20k backlinks to site.com
Doesn't that mean anything?
 
Sure, but I also believe Google will have known about those links prior to the desegregation of the domain and therefore will not apply a full point value to those links post-registration.

Expired domains lose backlinks extremely fast. If the site had 20,000 backlinks and 10,000 were pointing to internal pages that no longer exist you would lose 10,000 immediately. Many of the valuable links will also be removed. In the end though you are left with a site that has backlinks. I have two expired domains and have owned them since December 09. One started with 70,000 backlinks and still has 45,000 and the other started with 65K and still has 57K.

PR's on both were 5. One is now 4 and the other 3. They still pass juice...

Didn't really think about that.. It must somehow be profitable, though.. Can't you like.. Set up a software that
A) Scans for sites that are expiring
B) Check how many backlinks the site has
C) If it has a lot, it notes down a list of where most of the backlinks are to.. Like it would note down:
1k backlinks to site.com
500 backlinks to site.com/edward
etc.

Then, when you've bought the domain, you could simply create edward.php and in that file, you could do a permanent redirect to your site.com - that way you wouldn't lose any backlinks. Do you think that could work out? I mean, I'm sure that if you made some good software, it could probably find some good domains if it was running all the time.. It might give more juice than running scrapebox and all that, plus, you can run scrapebox on the domain afterward, to pass more juice to your money site..

What do you think about that idea? Also, does the domain lose its "age" when you buy it? Say it's 5 years old, can you spam away with scrapebox or should you handle it like it's a new site?
 
Looks like people don't really agree.. Could I get some more people's opinions?
 
Hi,
Market Samurai, which is available on BHW now includes Domain Samurai. Domain Samurai does exactly what you are looking for - locates expired/expiring domains using your keyword. Be warned though, domains with higher PR or a lot of traffic etc are not cheap. You can find bargains however.

Expiring domains have a lot of power...whoever said that they lose value and PR when they expire is wrong.
 
expiring domains dont lose there PR when expiring..but remember content is king and thats what your site is ranking for anyways..
 
I prefer GoDaddy Domain Auctions, there's a big selection of aged domains for $5. I just bought an 8-year-old two-word generic domain with a few backlinks for $5. There's some gold nuggets in there if you feel like sifting through.

The only tool I know of that sorts through GoDaddy domain auctions automatically is part of the uber-expensive WPMage system. I think there's definitely a market for such a tool if you were to code one. I know I'd use it.

P.S. Nice avatar OP, that image still inspires card-lust years after quitting M:tG lol.
