Making Bank on the Bitcoin Dip: My Simple Strategy

I have never sold my portfolio, I have been accumulating assets since spring 2024, now my return is around 30% and I still don't plan to sell anything but will only buy more and more assets

Bitcoin's down over 16% from its recent ATH, dragging the whole crypto market with it. If a crypto winter hits, we could see BTC drop by 80% or more.

I sold off my entire crypto portfolio before the crash and now I'm working on a strategy to profit from this downturn. The core idea is to short Ethereum against a basket of altcoins selected based on a simple principle:

Buy an asset when it enters the top 30, 50, or 100 rankings.
These rankings act like unofficial crypto market indices, similar to how stock market indices work. This simple top-tier asset selection method has been effective since the late 19th century (think Dow Jones).

The image shows my strategy gained 7% while BTC dropped 10% in the first 4 days. I've traded 4 assets so far, closing two with profit because they dropped out of the rankings. I rebalance the portfolio daily. Weekly updates to follow.
when did you get in BGB? any other good cex tokens that are low cap?

I am gambling against you who knows let's enjoy
Betting against me means you're shorting the market. You using futures or just straight up selling crypto?
Great but do technical analysis first. Why risk your money.
I'm running an index strat, bro. Indexes are basically technical analysis on steroids. Plus, I'm hedging my bets, so I'm long and short at the same time. Market goes up, I win. Market goes down, I still win. I'm basically printing money regardless.

My BGB entry was purely based on my strategy – it ticked all the boxes. Honestly, I'm not convinced about Bitget's long-term prospects (feels a bit scammy), but the token's price action was undeniable. If you're looking for similar CEX token plays, they're few and far between. In my experience since 2016, there have only been a handful of similar pumps. The key is to find a CEX that's embracing the memecoin craze. That's where the real hype and volume are. I haven't come across any CEX specifically targeting that niche yet, but that's what I'd be looking for.
This is really good strategy. Which apps do you use for shorting? Is there a video tutorial that you can recommend?
Thanks! It's a simple system I've automated. I pull the top 100 cryptos from CoinMarketCap daily and run a comparison against the previous day's data. I focus on the shifts within the top 30, 50, and 100. Any coins that fell out of the rankings get sold, and the new entries get bought. Then, I make sure the total dollar amount of these buys matches my ETHUSD short. It's all about keeping things balanced.

I haven't produced any video tutorials myself((((

where you can buy this way?
You can short ETH/USD on pretty much any major spot exchange. Binance, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Kraken... the list goes on.
Imagine buying at this drop and then bitcoin going to zero. Nothing is impossible in crypto.
If Bitcoin goes to zero, everything else goes with it. I'm shorting ETH, so I'm banking on this drop.
80% i don't think, thats gonna happend
You think we're gonna pump forever? Nah, bro. Crypto moves in cycles. We've had bull runs, and we'll have bear markets. "Summer child, what do you know of fear? Fear is for the winter, when the snow falls a hundred feet deep..." Winter is coming, whether you like it or not.

My strategy has been crushing it for two weeks now! Even though Bitcoin dropped 6%, I’ve managed to pull in a 6% profit by rotating into alts.

What’s the secret? All positions are hedged with a short on ETHUSD. But here’s the catch—when Bitcoin and Ethereum pump, my paper profits get eaten up. I hit over 20% at one point.

No worries, though. Bitcoin’s price will likely drop after retesting the $100,000 resistance level. I don't expect this upside to last more than a month or so.

I'm holding 11 positions right now, with three showing over 20% gains. Let’s see how far this run goes!

okay so you were slightly right on short timeframe dip. Expecting a big pump with Trump in office. those are all safe high cap, any low caps you recommend?
thanks

I don't mess with anything outside the top 100, too risky for me. If you're looking for moonshots, check out presales on launchpads on exchanges (IEOs, IGOs). That's where the real potential is, but do your own research first

Hey OP, interesting strategy, I have some questions if you can answer please.

1. Selection Criteria

How do you decide which coins to include in your basket?

Do you rely solely on market cap rankings (e.g., top 30, 50, or 100), or do you also consider other factors like trading volume, project fundamentals, or recent news?

2. Rebalancing Rules

How often do you rebalance your portfolio—daily, weekly, or only when coins drop out of the rankings?

What triggers a sell decision beyond ranking changes?

3. Altcoins Diversity

Do you aim for a specific distribution (e.g., equal allocation across all selected coins), or do you give more weight to certain coins based on their potential?

4. Risk Management

How do you handle risk in your altcoins basket, especially during extreme market downturns?

Do you set stop-losses or allocate a portion of your portfolio to stablecoins as a hedge?

My coin selection is pretty straightforward. I compare the current top 100 crypto list with the one from the last time I traded. So, if I didn't trade during the weekend, I'll compare Friday's list with Monday's. I don't strictly adhere to the top 30, 50, or 100 rule, but I try to avoid coins that are constantly fluctuating in and out of those rankings. I used to delve into fundamentals, but it made me miss some good opportunities.
I rebalance my portfolio whenever I have fresh capital to invest. I then compare the current rankings with the previous ones and adjust my holdings accordingly. If a coin climbs the ranks (from top 100 to 50 to 30), I increase my position in it, and the opposite if it drops.
For me, it's all about the rankings. I don't specifically target diversification, the market takes care of that by itself. My portfolio includes a mix of everything: meme coins, Ethereum killers, GameFi projects, you name it.
I only trade on the spot market, so the risk is minimal in that sense. I do have a short position on ETHUSD, but it's purely a temporary hedge against a potential crypto winter. I'm prepared for ETH to drop by as much as 80% during a bear market, which I believe should provide adequate downside protection for my portfolio. While ETH has unlimited upside potential, I hold 13 different altcoins, which I expect to outperform ETH in a bull run.

My portfolio hasn't seen much action recently, until the launch of the new OFFICIAL TRUMP memecoin. I picked some up this morning, and so far, it's been a winning trade.

Unfortunately, the rest of my portfolio is struggling, which is impacting my overall returns. I'm now performing worse than Bitcoin, which I'm using as a benchmark for comparison.

To get a better understanding of individual asset performance, I created a profit histogram. It clearly shows which assets are contributing to the losses. As a reminder, I'm hedging all potential losses with a short position on ETH.

Bitcoin down 20% from highs, alts even worse. My portfolio's still green. Check the chart, blue line's my profit vs. BTC's gold line.

Strategy's in the thread, running 18 coins, even TRUMP, but 7 main holdings.

damn, I only love trading future, holding is too much stress for me
My strategy's perfect for crypto futures, they're perpetual. With the right hedge, you can even make money on holding fees. And profit on every market drop. Deeper the correction, bigger the profit. Here's my portfolio report.

80% drop is too much from here. I doubt we will see so much correction, even if there is bear market.

Bitcoin's dropped 80% seven times. But yeah, we got ETFs now. People think they'll stop a big crash. But how big will the correction be? Stocks drop 30%, Tesla lost 50% easy. Bitcoin's way more volatile. 70% drop, maybe?
How are things holding up?
Things are holding up great! I'm running a hedged portfolio, so the profit curve is nice and smooth unless there's some wild market action. Currently, I'm up 8%, same as at the end of last week. And check this out, my ETH short is up a massive 379% overall!

Short-term investment (surfing) like yours is OK.
But long-term investment is not recommended, I heard, because BTC can crash at any time.
