Hey guys,
I want to get into SEO, at least to find out if I enjoy it.
I have some technical knowledge, working as an IT expert.

I just dont know where to start. I am reading all those terms here, Backlinks, redirects, indexing and many more.
Of course some I am familiar with some of those terms, but not in the sense of SEO and why they are important or what they really do with the search engine.
Are there any good threads you can recommend here or even good YT Channels or Websites I can absorb to get the knowledge of SEO.

Thanks

Best way is to find a niche, build a small site and start doing. Take it a step at a time but there is no better way to learn than actually doing it yourself.

I am currently watching the YouTube series from Ahrefs, just to get familiar with the terminology and general process... Is WordPress good for SEO or what is a good way to build a site for SEO?

WP is fine to get started but a small HTML site would be better in the long run as it will teach you basic html skills that you will need

I'd recommend breaking it down into three key areas: on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical. check out Backlinko’s blog, Ahrefs’ YouTube channel, Neil Patel’s site for detailed explanations of terms like backlinks and indexing

Just curious why you want to get into SEO since it's a slow way of getting traffic and it's often expensive (time or money wise).

Overall it's not difficult to understand, but you gotta run in the dark for a while not knowing if it'll work and there's lots of things to learn.

Some things are outdated, others are bs from seo gurus so there will be some confusion in the beginning.

To get into SEO, I always recommend starting practically, it’s far more effective than just watching videos or reading books and articles. Build a small test website to practice techniques like on-page SEO, link building, and content optimisation. Working with GSC (Google Search Console) will teach you actionable insights, and keyword research itself is a fascinating mystery to solve. Learn how to analyse websites and their performance. The best way to learn SEO is to start experimenting and applying what you learn directly to real projects.

Starting with SEO as an IT expert gives you a great head start because you already understand technical concepts. Here’s how you can begin learning SEO:

Websites & Blogs:

  • Moz Beginner's Guide to SEO: Easy-to-follow guide for beginners.
  • Ahrefs Blog: Great articles about backlinks, keywords, and indexing.
  • Search Engine Journal (SEJ): Updates on SEO tips and news.
  • Google Search Central: Official resources from Google about how search works.

YouTube Channels:

  • Ahrefs: Simple videos on backlinks, keywords, and SEO basics.
  • Neil Patel: Easy explanations for SEO strategies.
  • Google Search Central: Tips straight from Google about crawling, indexing, and ranking.

Threads & Communities:

  • Reddit’s r/SEO: A helpful community to ask questions and learn from others.
  • SEO Signals Lab (Facebook Group): Practical advice and tips from experts.
To get hands-on experience, try free tools like Google Search Console, Google Analytics, or Screaming Frog to see how SEO works in action.

To start with SEO, begin by understanding its basics like keywords, on-page optimization, backlinks, and site structure. Platforms like Moz, Ahrefs, and SEMrush have excellent beginner guides. YouTube channels like Neil Patel, Backlinko (Brian Dean), and Ahrefs Tutorials are great for practical knowledge. For a community perspective, threads on forums like Black Hat World or Reddit’s r/SEO can offer insights, but stay cautious about outdated or black-hat techniques. Since you already have technical IT skills, learning about Google Search Console, schema markup, and technical SEO will come naturally. Start small, test what you learn, and grow step by step!

Maybe someone else could confirm or deny this? Especially the HTML part? I really dont feel like getting into HTML, coding is not really my thing...

Hey, welcome! A good place to start is learning the basics of on-page and off-page SEO. Neil Patel's YouTube channel and Moz's Beginner’s Guide to SEO are super helpful. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find a ton of useful tips in threads here too!

I really dont know why, I have been using traffic exchange and some other things to get traffic. SEO seems like a selfrunning thing if you get your site ranked.

Great to see you’re interested in SEO! For beginners, sites like Moz, Ahrefs, and Backlinko have awesome guides that break down the basics in an easy way. For YouTube, check out channels like Neil Patel or Ahrefs—they have tons of tutorials. Once you get the basics, try experimenting on your own site; it’s a great way to learn by doing! Good luck!

Take free courses from SEMrush. Also, check the Backlinko blog and Matt Diggity on YouTube.

Udemy courses about SEO with 4 star reviews and above, with 10k reviews or more are a good start.
