So,

I intend to flip a site - but the domain transfer matter is holding me back in proceeding to market it online. My domain is on squarespace, and I was hoping I can make the buyer make an account there so that I can transfer the domain without any fees since it's within their platform.

BUT

they say I have to create a trial site - connect the domain there and THEN transfer ownership?? Like, the domain is already linked to Shopify, I cannot do that, and why do they not have such simple feature? Also I've waited a week for them to respond to my e-mail. I guess they've spent all the money buying out google domains and nothing left to spend on customer service...The response I got was also just copy & paste from their article..

td:lr - I want to transfer the domain from squarespace to my client, but since it was just bought and it expiries in 1 year, I cannot transfer it to namecheap or godaddy, cuz they will charge me again for renewal like 10-15$, which will be til like half of 2026...

Any ideas how I could sort this out?

Another reason i moved all my domains out of google before the deadline

Why did you buy it on Squarespace?

Spend the $10-12 to transfer it to Namecheap, no sane buyer wants the domain in squarespace.

No idea but I would bite the bullet and get it off their and chalk it up as a lesson learned.

I prefer Dynadot - hate namecheap's interface and don't get me started on their hosting!

Yes, I have mine at Cloudflare nowadays, used Namesilo before .. But he seemed to want Namecheap or GoDaddy in his post so I chose the least evil one in my post.

Namecheap is a bad place, I moved from them years ago to Namesilo and now I´m cheap so Cloudflare is my go-to guy now.

I bought it 2 years ago on Google Domains - renewed it few days ago as the deadline was til 7th June, I assumed such big "player" has the most simplest features eh

That's interesting, could you elaborate why namecheap is bad? I can see namesilo has .com domains at $14, godaddy & namcheap usually go for a tener, well at least for the 1st year

btw. I only listed those domain providers because they're the only ones I know, (and dynadot) , if anyone has better ones by all means let me know :) For now it's just for transffering domain to my client, but I may flip one or two domains too, so definitely good to know if there are better alternatives

I had a lot of troubles with paid domains that were not registred or wrong domains registred thru the years with Namecheap and I´m not alone. They prey on noobs. I've been registering domains for almost 30 years since my first one, so I think I have a grip on what works and not. If you need cheap price, there is no other than Cloudflare to register them for quality. But everyone have their own experiences so go with whomever you think seems nice.

Nah I prefer to listen to people that are smarter than me rather then go with by gut :D

Thank you for the input, cloudfare seems great, stating they don't take any markups and such :) Indeed best value possible, I'll try them up :D Although they say ICANN rules don't allow to transfer domains that have been transferred within last 60 days, so if I'll transfer my domain now from Squarespace -> Cloudfare, I won't be able to do Cloudfare -> My client, once I'll flip my website and would need to transfer domain ;x

Anyway thanks, I'll have to figure it out somehow :D

Really? Wasn’t namespace a reputable registrar? My favorite has always been name.com but they’ve increased the prices so much and their new dashboard sucks. I thought namecheap was loved by everyone.

Na, not really.
Am using Spaceship exclusively at the moment because of the pricing (I know it is namecheap but better)

I may look at cloudfare when it comes to renewal.
The rest of my domains are in dynadot
I have a tag for the UK ones.

Careful with registrars - that industry is notoriously shady
Keeping the domain hostage is common. You are lucky if they don't try to hit you with an "overage bandwidth" bill or something while you are on your way out, holding back the domain to blackmail you.

Never have Domain & Hosting at the same place because this opens you up for blackmailing for no good reason.

In my next sentence I will contradict myself but 1) it's Hetzner, man and 2) Domains and Hosting are not connected at all there. You can easily cancel / transfer whatever the one thing and keep the other...

At this point the only ones I can recommend are Cloudflare and Hetzner (Their "Robot" section is separate from hosting. Domains are not connected to hosting, as it should be)
