I need a reality check for domain flipping.

DA and website history aside focusing on the name aspect - that somebody is looking for a name with good, popular keywords. like "tech spot. com" etc. - and I'm buying domains to flip also purely focusing on the name.



1. Reality check about the pricing

a) If i got a domain name that has 1 very popular niche word + 1 universal popular word like i.e tech spot. com, or tech buddy. com - what would be the price range I should aim for here?

b) same as above but this time the 2nd universal word is less popular, or maybe longer, not that slick/eye-catching i.e tech majesty .com or tech pegasus. com

c) speeding up the selling process to not wait 1-2 years- any ideas? I was thinking FB groups about selling domains, pitching "I have this and that for this niche", was also thinking about finding people who want to buy a domain in a certain niche, but FB would ban pretty quickly when I'd reach out to too many people.

d) if I'm flipping domains based on names, should I bother considering things like domain age, and all the other parameters? In my mind I shouldn't but again, I'm a newbie in this space so I'm asking just to be sure



I know those are hard to predict, but any kind of price range would be very helpful, I don't want to overprice and wait 2 years

Firstly, domain pricing is not scientific, so these rules do not work.

Like you said at the beginning, SEO domains command money

When you focus on names alone, there are no rules. The "rules" are made up by other domainers.

Who is your customer?

1. Other domain sellers who want it at wholesale pricing, which can be as low as 2-3% of retail (range $10-1000s)
2. Users, which can also include sellers, who want to develop a website around domain 50-100% of retail depending on the name
3. Retail - someone who is looking for this domain or wants the .com over others
4. Startup/unicorns - multiples of retail but is very, very, very difficult to find.

In general
Short are better than long
.com is superior in pricing, but don't dismiss others (especially if .com sold high)
Numbers only really do well if there is a meaning or Chinese numerology
mixed do badly unless above (I just sold LLL02.com for 2.7K despite everyone telling me it was worthless)

3L.com is the goldmine
4L.com must be word or pronounceable

Age does not matter! But domainers love age

SEO:
TF is the only one, but domainers love DA/SS (both are utterly useless for ranking)

Valuing domains is an art not science - look at previously sold prices - Namebio.com
Estibot is ok for valuations but again not a science!

GoDaddy valuations are useful but not accurate when selling to other domainers or when putting it for sale on Dan and GD

Thanks, I got a much better idea about how it works now

namebio is great, but with their 10 free results limit I can't really have a good feel of how the things are in what I'm looking for ;x do you know any free alternative? Tried looking up sold auctions at godaddy but can't seem to find filtering options for that

Just bought a domain, 2 words, 8 letters total, unfortunately fresh 0 age, 1 DA, but I hope the name will defend itself - listed for 2 hundos as a test. That was one of the 3 I've picked out of 500 researched in a certain niche, we'll see how it goes.

Btw. can I ask you 3 more questions about actual selling?
1. Is it better to set an auction with an end time - or buy it now? I feel like buy it now could be worse, as people sometimes search the keyword and sort by closeouts and that way the domain gets more traffic/exposure + when I set a buy now price I get just that, the domain is harder to be discovered - and with auction I can see my BN as minimum price and hope for more. But again, that's just my logic, I'm wondering what experience (you) will say
2. Best websites to list a domain? namecheap, GoDaddy? something else? sedo?
3. Is doing an auction on a few websites allowed? similar question to BN auctions, what if 1 domain is sold on 2 different platforms?

Btw. I decided to get into flipping domains cuz I once had the domain for my POD store "print fizz . com" and it sold for $50 BN within 2 weeks of listing on sedo, and it didn't even seem that good to me, so I thought hey, maybe it's worth doing.

1. GD auctions have stopped for user to user
2. You can list at all he sites for BIN but sedo charges for auctions, Dynadot only allows if it is with them as a registrar, Namecheap only auctions for themselves not users
3. The chances of selling on 2 platforms is very low unless you have an amazing domain.

Giving you some buyer's perspective:

I bought one through Godaddy and although I am not a fan of them the domain buying process was smooth I gotta admit

I found the domain on the web while surfing, looked up the whois, contacted the Email listed in the whois, and was then got contacted back not by the owner but by a sales person from Godaddy. I never spoke to the actual domain owner, the guy from Godaddy was very smooth and kept going back and forth between me and the seller. It took two weeks of back and forth negotiating, which brought the domain down from XX,XXX to X,XXX and the final payment process was also good. I made an account at Godaddy, got a bill from Godaddy, was able to put in my VAT number so I didn't have to pay VAT (Godaddy appears to be registered in the EU, too), paid with Paypal, no surprising fees or any fees were added, domain was pushed into my account within an hour or so.

I was surprised that even Paypal didn't annoy me, it was my biggest transfer I think so far, on a very old, verified business Paypal account, but still, I always expect the worst from PayPal.

Oh, and in my first email to the owner I already included an X,XXX offer right in the Email subject. I think that is required, from a buyer's perspective, to even get an answer. I ended up paying twice the amount I offered initially.


And I bought the domain for its brandability. It has some backlinks, incl. a Do follow from CNN, but that wasn't that important, more like a welcome bonus.
