The fact that they didn't allow for another option besides e-mail and phone number for account recovery, kind of hinted at them not being secure with high privacy protection. A company that really was serious about privacy protection would have added additional recovery methods such as a recovery code or a phrase.

Proton is shit, they didn't let me read registration email that came to my freshly registered proton account because their tos or whatever. And I was just registering anonymously for (free) OS license. Can't imagine using them for something more serious. Waste of time.

The UK cops hacked the company's encrypted servers and installed spyware that allowed them to intercept hundreds of messages that sent a lot of crooks to jail.

No one said Protonmail was anonymous or even privacy friendly. They even encourage you to sync your google accounts now. That being said, they are very secure.
