Curious about this because I've been reluctant to believe burn out is a real thing.

But having come off the back of failing with 3 businesses in 2023. It seems my drive is at an all time low.

I have more than enough reason to try make money online, to help my family etc but for some reason I just can't bring myself to complete the tasks that I KNOW need doing.

I find myself procrastinating or mentally masturbating with new business ideas and I think the whole reason I'm going through this period is because I'm "burnt out"

This has turned into a therapy session at this point :p But yeah how do you guys deal with similar feelings?

Most of us go through this sometimes. To keep my mind fresh, I exercise six days a week.
I either go to the gym, biking, outdoor walk or run. I especially like outdoor activities.

This is what works for me.

because you want to help others. May be Im wrong. Why are you going to help your family ? Are they sick ? Cannot work ? just get rid of people who take your energy and money.

It's a very real thing.

As @IM Dude said, sleep well. It's extremely important. If you don't believe it, research what happens in your brain and body when you sleep.

Besides sleep, manage your stress and get some rest.

Burnout means you are exhausted, and your body and brain can't handle all those things you throw at it.

If you ignore it, things will get worse. Your work quality will be very bad, and if you think you are winning and getting things done.. well, you need to rethink that. That's because you will perform poorly and end up fixing your stuff later which wastes even more time.

Ahh yes the fear of failure-dilemma and formed with biases associated with benefit of no reward.

It's interesting, here's some scenarios:
starting a new job then being told what you need to do(while convincing your self it's for your family and not you)that you know is temporary when it never is.
starting a second new job then being told what you need to do(while convincing your self it's for your family and now you love it)but because you're competitive and tenacious it backfires while coming home stressed.

You just want positive traction, if you go for a pay rise less time with family, if you take the pay rise you look after your family.

you start a YouTube channel but get no positive feedback, you feel burned, all you want to know if wasting your time has become a justified action knowing now the younger generation will repeat the same cycle but because they're tenacious and hungry you feel even more burnt out.

So you buy your self a nice gift and try to make money from it, something you wanted but you question what's the point while feeling bummed out.

You want a break but not god or the food chain listens as the perpetual shell spins you realise it's do or die, you either do it knowing it's your last day tomorrow or don't

do or die that is the question, rise up and try ever so but with no feedback you feel trapped.

DO or die, there's no try at this point, do it as if you got nothing to lose, don't try because you're past that noose.

Get some good sleep and workout.

Also, take breaks from time to time. Have a group of friends you hang out with on weekends, or go for a walk in the park after doing a block of work for a few hours.

Whatever helps you unwind, though preferably not screen-involved if you're already using computers and devices for work.

Appreciate the answers! Will take on board everyones advice.
I know how that feels, had something similar happen earlier this year

Will read this one, thanks.
Sleep 8 hrs. Do you sleep 8 hrs?
I try to, but don't always get it. Probably get 6-7.

Yeah I've been getting back in the gym recently, it definitely help!

Imo maybe you misunderstood but the reason I want to be successful in business is so that I can retire my parents who have taken care of me my whole life, and now struggle with bills and heavy finance problems. They aren't "taking" any energy or money.

Yeah appreciate this. I need to focus on quality sleep too because I wakeup with brain fog sometimes.

Get some blood work done and see if you’re missing any vitamins. Things like b-12 and iron for instance being low can make your blood cells weaker making oxygen less available so your heart works harder ( anemia if not corrected ) . Lack of Vitamin D can make you a tired pissy grump too. When you work a lot sometimes you end up not eating right , also drink lots of water and keep kidneys and liver happy too.

I’d get a panel done and see if you’re perhaps fatigued from that …. I have family in medicine and they tell me stories like this all the time .

Thanks for watching my TED talk

@smhtimson having gone through burnout multiple times earlier this year, here are some things I tried:

1. I stopped mind fucking myself about how burned out I was - - instead of "ah, fuck, I didn't get enough sleep, I'm already so burned out, and now my sleep's fucked up, I'm so screwed", just establishing a rule like "hey, if its more than 5.5 hours, I'm good" "hey, if I ate healthy for at least 4 days this week, it's all good" - - - that helped me take the boot off my own neck.

2. I also have an ageing parent to take care of, and this definitely weighs on me, but I forced myself to accept the fact that I had to first get my own shit handled, before worrying about them - - and if "getting my shit handled" meant taking a few weeks off from work, that was fine. I used to try to motivate myself by thinking about all the people who depend on me that I'd disappoint - - and this works 90% of the time, but not when I'm burnt out. When I'm emptied out, then I've found a little self-compassion can work wonders. I also took my dad on a week-long vacation. Of course, parents value their kids supporting them financially etc, but they also value having a good relationship with their kids. Money is one of many ways you can take care of someone.

3. I got myself excited about learning a new skill: coding. I would sit down for a couple hours everyday with leetcode problems, just because. Just for the joy of problem-solving. I put aside all thoughts of "how can I use this" or "how long will it take before I get ROI from this" - - these are great thoughts to have 90% of the time, just not during burnout. Learning a skill just because it was interesting and challenging, with no external outcome whatsoever, helped me a ton.

4. I got back to reading fiction again, put the self help/business/marketing books aside for a few weeks. I was so burnt out that just reading a business book or listening to a podcast would put me into a shitty mood because of all the things I could do but wasn't doing etc.

5. I cut out around 60% of the things I was working on. I stopped working on niches that didn't have high ROI. I stopped working on services that were volatile. I made my mind up to not work on any business product/service idea unless it was an evergreen one. No more "let's find a loophole on X platform and exploit the shit out of it for 2 weeks" - - I'm just too old for that shit, I'd rather work on things that take longer to build, but also last longer. I also got VERY realistic with my goals and what I was aiming for. I used to think I would be amazing at pretty much everything if I just tried hard enough - - this is a great mindset to have, but it misses out on the fact that its much more feasible to just get really good at a few things. Once you're a couple years in, it's better to streamline, prune out everything that isn't working.

6. You mentioned 3 failed businesses. I've had 2 failed businesses (not marketing, one was a physical product manufacturing thing, the other was a niche technical service) in the past 7 years, and I've learned to joke about my current marketing business as a "not-yet-failed" business. Looking back, a lot of my prior business failures were the result of not giving the appropriate amount of attention to every aspect of a business. I would over-invest in product/service fulfillment and not pay attention to good customer service. My lead-gen was messed up and disorganized. I had way more ideas than I could implement and test. I didn't understand my customers well enough...etc etc etc. Your failed businesses will give you TONS of data on what you can improve in your processes, data you will never get from books or courses because it's specific to you and your working style.

7. Baby-stepping helped me slowly get back into work momentum. Chunking down tasks into smaller and smaller and smaller ones until they didn't feel daunting at all. Instead of "make a landing page for XYZ" I would make tasks like "think of a headline for a landing page for XYZ" just to slowly get myself into the mood again.

I did think the same - that burnout is weak peoples imagination and reason how to get an easy excuse for laziness. Until it did happen with me, more than 3 years ago. I still suffer from aftermath.

I started to not care so much, at least for now. And going out with dogs in the woods helps too, somehow reconnecting with nature helps to gain inner peace.

Burnout? Excuse, I am not a female so I cannot relate. My father works since 40 years on his farm from morning 6 am to 6pm, Monday-Saturday, I asked him if it's hard and he told me "that's how it supposed to be". Burn out, lol.

physical labor? cute. now try 20 years of constant stress and constant high expectations from your peers by working behind the screen and solving complex tasks. and failing. and repeating. and failing. and repeating.
