Adsense new GDPR content requirement, what to do?

If you put Adsense on EU country language sites, include UK, I think you already see the new GDPR requirement it shows to you.

Today, Google shows a new notice that you can choose what options to show to your site visitors at 1/19/2024 due date, below:



I want to ask, does anyone know if I choose show "Do Not Consent" button, if that means, when a user click this button, the adsense won't show on the page? Or Am I missing sth here?

Today they publish news on this via email:

Dear Partner,​

On May 16, 2023, we announced that we will require partners using our publisher products — Google AdSense, Ad Manager, or AdMob — to use a certified CMP that integrates with IAB Europe’s Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) when serving ads to users in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the UK. You can view a list of certified CMPs in our help center (Ad Manager, AdMob, AdSense).​

In July, as a follow up, we announced that we will begin to apply this requirement on January 16, 2024. This email serves as a reminder of that approaching deadline.​

Enforcement will begin January 16 on a small percentage of EEA and UK traffic, and will ramp up until we enforce across all EEA and UK traffic by end of February 2024. To ensure your monetization is not impacted, please have a certified CMP in place by January 16, 2024.​

Once enforcement begins, if you send Google an ad request for EEA or UK traffic, and it does not use a TCF-certified CMP (Ad Manager, AdMob, AdSense), personalized and non-personalized ads will no longer be eligible to serve. Instead, only Limited ads will be eligible to serve on Ad Manager and AdMob, and no ads will serve on AdSense. As a reminder, Limited ads are significantly more restrictive than non-personalized ads. As such, relying solely on Limited ads will likely decrease your EEA and UK revenue.​

We will continue to support your transition as you prepare for the new requirements. Please review our help center for further details (Ad Manager, AdMob, AdSense), including the full list of Google-certified CMPs. ​

But I don't understand, is this Google-certified CMPs thing necessary? I mean, they said "if you don't publish one, we will publish one for you", what does this mean? Is it the same thing?!

They publish a default one for you

Yes, essentially, if they opt out on all the choices (vendors), no ads will show (at least from my testing so far)

then i untick everything, no ads shows up ever

I let adsense handle this since it was first implemented some months ago. I removed the messages I had and just put the adsense message. I first tried with the consent and do not consent options, but after seeing that it was possible to put only a consent option and the manage options, I had almost the same earnings. So in the end test over and over again to see if it's worth it.

No, its different thing, you have to use a Google partner CMP, they don't recognize a thiry party plugin!

You have to use a Google partner CMP, they don't recognize a thiry party plugin! I just want to know if Google will take care of this for us after due time, or we are forced to use a CMP.

Yes, now we can choose don't show that "Do not Consent" button, I don't want to lose the money, so I don't show this button, you can always change the settings though.

Google will take care of it
Or you can just activate it via Google's Adsense panel yourself (I did that so I don't get the default prompt, since i rather it has Manage Options & Accept All than the variation with do not consent).
No need to go thru the google verified CMP service.

No, no need for a 3rd party plugin or another Google Verified CMP service.
At least from what I been experiencing, I turned that on for about a week or so ago, the notification to handle that has gone, we'll see in a month i guess.
(It's pretty confusing but as expected of google, they don't even know what they want)

Sorry to hear that lol, I am waiting for Google do this for me after due date. And yesterday, they let me choose show 2 or 3 buttons, I choose 2, because just like you said, if show a "Do Not Consent" button, it no question will affect earnings.

I guess you are using a CMP right? Maybe they have option to hide the do not consent button. If you don't do anything and wait Google do this for you, you can set this settings anytime, at least from what I can read now, lets see after 1/26/2024.

Ah, I forget to mention,
The prompt is also hidden if you have ad-block on aswell. (Since it is a popup)
But then again, if they had adblock to begin with, they weren't gonna see your ads anyways.

I try my hardest to avoid anything to do with European content. Any site that has these pop ups is just frustrating to use.

USA and Canada. But I also just mean for reading websites. If I see a result that has a European website, I won't click it.

if you choose google to do this for you, will it only show the popup to visitors from EU or UK OR all visitors to your site? Most of my traffic is non-UK and non-EU but I do have some. In process of applying for Adsense.

Hey guys!

Now we all know google automatically publish this GDPR thing for us, cool, I touched nothing!

But it prompts review the style and options today, I found the language setting part is a bit confusing, does this mean I don't need to change things? Like on the visitor's side, they will see this GDPR message automically turns to their prefered language? Or everyone will see default English popup?



Want to hear some thoughts on this.

I believe it displays based on the language of the site the adsense code is on. So if your site is in French, someone visiting from UK will see the notice in French. If your site is in English and someone from Germany visits it, the notice will be in English.
