Backlinks and Articles are not as useful as they used to be. The most important thing is manipulation. There is a new update now, I hope something will change soon.
 
How do you get into the snippet/people asked questions? it's always high da sites in the snippet even though they don't answer the question

Snippets will start to appear if we use table of contents, although not always. Actually, this is because Google is a bit inconsistent.

I have been writing programs, web and desktop software, for many years. As I have experienced over time, I prefer the trial and error method rather than reading articles.

You can follow Yoast SEO guidance. But you can learn a lot more with the trial and error method. I did this for years. For example, you can increase homepage authority by providing backlinks to subpages instead of the homepage.
