The referrer would show up in server logs, but as neither Scrapebox nor GSA executes javascript it would not show up in GA.

OP it isn't really worth the time and effort. It is the cheapest/lowest type of spam alongside ping spam.
It is also easy to block.
If you really want to do it, then any traffic bot should be able to do it.

You can find some petabytes of domains on github - they're a bit older in general, but should work as a starting point.

Also Zonefiles is not too expansive as well.

Does anyone know of a way to get this working with GA? I have a database of 92 million domains and I've wrote a system to extract the GA token from the websites but when I load for example
it shows in my GA under real time but then disappears the next day when GA users are able to check traffic sources. Even with a clean home IP.

You need to render JS for this. It's pretty slow, though. When I tried it some month ago, I first scanned for domains, wich have a ga JS in the html and created a filtered list for this.
But if realtime shows it, it should log it as well. Perhaps you triggered a filter with your user agent or ref.

Thanks for your reply. Rendering the js probably wouldn't make it cost effective for me so I'm trying to do it without. I can get it to show in real-time I'm just trying to work out how/why it's getting filtered out of the stats when it's viewed the next day. I know my IP is clean so it's probably something in the URL parameters that can't be faked like the cid or gtm.

ref spam is very old and used to work well to get backlinks from stats software like webalizer.

No, it only displays in server logs. At least the classic ref spam does...

I am working on some side project that is targeting exactly people who are looking server logs
so, in my case I am ok with having them just there. Fuss with javascript enabled system is too much, considering that google knows very well who are real people, they check many other factors like time on page, mouse movements, clicks etc and it's not worth it for simple ref spam.I am also working on php/js script for that, maybe tomorrow will finish it. With gui to put link for referrer, set number of threads, import links from text file or copy/paste into textarea, shufling links to reduce 429 errors, removing duplicated links, trim to root, and export of working / not working links (marked with server status code but saved clear, for easier re-import). Also rotating user-agents, and referrer link in the user agent, too.
