What is the story with Affiliate Managers?

I was emailing my CPA AM the other day and stopped to think what kind of guy this guy is and why does he do this job, which I think kinda sucks!?

I mean, you are positioned to believe that he is all knowledgeable and is indeed your manager like a manager in an 9-5 office job. But any time I ask him something specific I get vague answers, then he ignores me for a couple of days. He should be able to answer any question I have, right?

Then I thought, is this guy getting paid much?
I don't think so. Maybe 30-40k every year, well certainly not above 50k.

Even if he is making 50k a guy who can manage affiliates who are making a lot more than that every year, why doesn't he just quit work and join them?
Surely by now he has been checking out the super affs and knows what they are doing and of course what offers they are promoting. Are they failed affiliates??

Maybe he likes his job?
The job can't be that exciting, can it?
Replying to questions from noobs. How do I get traffic, how do I put banners on my website etc.?

What is their angle?
I am thinking that maybe they are one of the founders of the CPA/Affiliate company and somebody has to be the affiliate manager?


Maybe, I dunno. They are a strange breed.

Yeah, I think they do. I'm not 100% positive on that though. Some companies may have rules against that.

Most AMs I've worked with are little more than blackberry-droning monkeys. There are a few that seem to know what they're doing, of course, but they're few and far between.

And I hate to be sexist, but I have never worked with a female AM that knew a good campaign from a hole in the ground. I think they're typically hired so the "typical" fat, computer-nerd affiliate will be more drawn to the network? That's what it seems like to me, anyway.

I have a hate/love relationship with AM.

Because the guy for which I used to work found someone who would do it for $28K. Since then, I've seen this person's work. My ex-employer is getting what he paid for. The new Aff. Manager has lost three super affiliates in the last 6 months, and the company is now phasing out the department altogether.

If I was a AM, I'd check all the ref logs and copy what people make bank where doing, steal their keywords, the lot, I'd make more then them. xD

If i was am my main job would be to steal other people campaign sand keywords and make 4 times a s much as they were making and I was making at my job.
