What are your free/cheap most effective methods for growing a telegram/whatsapp group?

I am a telegram expert, so i can comment only on that.

For telegram group/channel growth there are multiple ways to do it. Most important is content, if your content is good people will stay. TO publish your content we can use shilling/DMs/forced invites

Content is not the problem, getting found is. Can you tell the best ways to promote a telegram group?

It all depends upon your existing content and either you are running a channel / group.
If its group then force invite can be done which is a way to bring up real users at a lot faster than DMs. But if its channel then this approach is not possible.
for channel/group we can use DMs , with dms again results are according to your content, just consider it like TV promos, if you have a good commercial you can get better results. All the guys who do DMs are just carriers to publish your message. Some may be good at what they do than others but end result is your content again.
Forced shilling is bot/human will go to group to group and post your message... not guaranteed deliver but a group which has 100k members if message stay there for 1 hour may be 10k have seen it.

I want to grow it organically, but it'd be nice to have some fake accounts (without any privileges) just for the sake of numbers. Lately some bots have been registering, but that they can't do anything because I have two bots preventing them.

Utilize social media, cross-promote with relevant groups/influencers, create engaging content, participate in online communities, encourage invitations/referrals, promote on your website.

The most important thing is content. If your content is good, you will notice an upward growth.
