I have some questions on how to properly utilize an expired domain with a backlink from for example Forbes on an old article that you know the URL of using SemRush.

Let's assume that Forbes has a link to yourmom.com/10-best-gadgets (your domain).

How to take advantage of this? By creating an article on this exact URL that links to your moneysite, or do a 301 redirect? If 301 redirect, do you do this on the URL itself or for the whole site? I have read in here that you have to wait before doing a 301 redirect - what do you wait for, and when do you know if you can proceed?

I have also read that there should be a connection between the niche of the link and your niche. What are the risks, and how many / few pages can you have that make 301 redirect to your page before Google twists your arm around your back and keeps it there until you eventually abandon the page?

Is all this an effective way to rank higher on Google, or should you just focus on link-building through guest posts?

You can always redirect that link to your homepage. If the niche is good, create a site with similar niche and put a good relevant article on that link.

Just don't complicate too much if you have a domain on which you are getting backlinks from forbes.com or any other high DA site just create a website catering to the niche and also make sure to check Wayback to recover old pages of the website. And if the link is pointing to any specific page so recover that page first and build a good website out of it.

The whole idea for me in buying expired domains is to boost my own site - as an alternative to link-building through guest posts

But for that you had to do the big exercise of restoring the entire website from its grave, only to get one link!

Instead if you had invested in buying multiple guest posts, wouldn't it be a better idea?

And where have you hosted it BTW? Don't tell me it lies on the same server as your money site!

Aside from the obvious 301s, I always suggest building a landing page/miniblog that funnels audiences to one or more of your sites by redirecting the audience expecting thing X to your sites that offer Y.

E.g. you have a domain about kindergartens. You can redirect it:
-> Woodworking
Write how young kids have varied interests you can cultivate and how your kids became interested in woodworking.
-> Make-up
Write how, "as a mom" you are asked often by your children to use your make-up stuff and how you can't wait for them to be teenagers so that you can help them out as you're passionate about make-up.
-> Cars
Write how children love playing with various toys and how cars are toys for adult men.

I've done it a couple of times and Google seems to like it .

Why would you need to restore the whole site? Isn't it "just" restoring the page linked to from an authoritative site?

As I see it, it's significantly cheaper to buy a domain with a quality link than to get it through guest posting, which in many cases costs upwards of $100 (and a lot more in some cases)

I haven't bought any domains yet, but yes, my thought was to put it on BlueHost together with my money site. Is this a problem?

For recreation, use Archivarix.

The more backlinks, the better, of course. You can take the long route (many backlinks, fewer funnels) or the wide route (targeted backlinks, many funnels). Of course, combining the two would be the most beneficial albeit costly.

Alright, I thought you had restored the site as anyone else would do. But if you are restoring only few pages then that should be fine. Remember, that unrestored pages will start reflecting in GSC as 404 errors. Hope you have a plan to handle that.

Looks like you have got this domain under 100 which is a good thing. You should also consider the hosting and other maintenance costs too.

Alright, I thought you had restored the site as anyone else would do. But if you are restoring only few pages then that should be fine. Remember, that unrestored pages will start reflecting in GSC as 404 errors. Hope you have a plan to handle that.
