Is it possible to get hacked by opening Facebook message?

Very possible through phishing. Like what the guys above said, don't click on links.

Recently I was scrolling through my feed and they served me an add that had an attached file to download. It was a virus.

There are only two ways to hack your Facebook:
1. steal your password through phishing (which won't help them much). Conclusion - always check the address of the site when you enter your password.
2. Convince you to download a malicious file. I don't think an explanation is needed.

Opening a Facebook message and reading the message is safe enough. Hacking can happen if you click on any malicious links in the message and then for example land up onto a phishing website.
If a scammer or hacker wants to for example target your Facebook account, that phishing website, in your browser's web address bar, will not start with "https://www.facebook.com......".
If you ever receive a phone call stating that they are calling from Facebook, about your Facebook account, hang up and do not bother about it.
If you need help with Facebook, you use Facebook's official help options on Facebook's official website and contact Facebook directly on your own.

Yes, It is very much possible. So, it's better to avoid clicking.

That is very harmful. How did it pass their ad review system?

Well technically YES! If you start chatting to the guy. Once you connect with the guy he/she can get your IP and try to hack your system. But..... thats very rare and I really doubt someone would put all these effort only to hack your system. Unless you are very important person lol

So As long as you don't click on any link and don't open/download any files, you'll be fine. He won't be able to keylog you and hack you.

These days everyone is important. Like the average income pee year has increased for all. People also store money in options in crypto. If my system is hacked through Facebook, it will be big financial loss for me.

That can bro if some of the links and notices you need to log into your account are from fake websites

donot clink the url/link.

well in that case if you have lots of crypto becareful who you chat to. Don't trust anyone, it would be your close friend or family member.

However in this case I doubt he will go that far to hack you thro your IP. I mean the process is very complex , they have to ping your IP while you're online, find open routes, then try sql injection or run script or find a away to access your system. again very complex.

Just to be safe never open any messages from unknown people and never click or download any link. <-- follow this and you'll be safe 100%

think i'll be the first person to say no
it's usually not just by "opening a link".
the user has to do something after visiting the link
download a file, accepting prompts, submitting information.
a phishing page is useless and does 0 damage if the user opens the tab, doesn't submit info, closes the tab, and goes on about their day.

unless there is some wild 0day exploit in that case something so dangerous is better (in eyes of the attacker) spent targeting ceo's, directors, celebrities. not a nobody on fb.

what can a person really do with IP. get your geo location? compromising with an IP is a fantasy. bad actor can scan for open ports on network. what next? send something to my printer? mess with an IOT device? that's a big IF. depends on an active exploit. most cases does not exist. what if i have nothing open like 99.999% of people.
i get 250k unique hits per month. many webmasters get more. why arent these IP dumps sold on the usual marketplaces. it's not worth the byte it's written on. hackers just run a calculator from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 and see who is awake. ask any one who runs a vps, how many failed attempts they get on fail2ban. this attacks for infrastructure, not random joe on a home router.

only thing that comes to mind is there used to be some attackers targetting crypto users. opening a link would open a metamask transaction. but iirc even then, the end-user had to approve the transaction. it's more of a sophisticated phishing attempt. if you deny all prompts=no damage.

Facebook is the place where scammers thrive, I often see FB ads that when clicked, lead to scam sites. Some ads even impersonate big companies, they use the logo of a popular company so if you are not careful you would click on the FB ad. I don't know how these scam ads are approved by FB.

How can they get your IP? Do you have a real explanation for that? We are not in 2000s anymore, this is not possible.
Somehow they got your IP, still they can't do anything.

Answer to OP:
No, 99% of time it's not possible. They can't hack you just with Facebook message.

Well read what i've written on top. I said when you "start chatting to him" on facebook (messenger). So they can simply get your IP once you're chatting with them. Then it all depends on your open roots and what kind of programs you're using. Its still being done to this day. Do simple google search and you'll see that its still happening (Yes in 2022, NOT 2002 but 2022). Also i've clearly written its very rare but also doable!

Regarding Getting your IP. Come chat to me on facebook and i'll give you your IP within seconds.
