Would you choose a domain name that is exactly the search term you are targeting or rather a short name domain and do the title, meta and other Onsite SEO for the Targeted search term ?

I prefer branded domains, EMDs are just a headache and you always have to pay extra attention to avoid over optimization.

Don't buy domain names more length than 10-12 characters, no matter if its EDM

Good question. I like keyword domains when they effectively communicate what your product does since it improves user experience. Counterexample: Screaming frog has good name recognition, but to the uninitiated, it's just another thing to learn. I don't think a keyword domain will improve SEO on its own. Google knows better than that.

Gone are the days when EMDs held importance. This is the era of brandable names.

Still, if you get some good keyworded name then do not hesitate to own it but beware that it will not help much SEO wise.

depending on what is the purpose, if you make a large or medium site, then a branded domain

if you need a lot of sites with little traffic, then EMD

Building a brand name from scratch? I wouldn't. Rather look at buying an expired domain that is easy to spell, easy to pronounce, shorter than 14 characters and had a good non spam backlink profile, huge history of good content and metrics. There are sellers and advertisers here.
