I do believe that backlinks are already not as important as they once were (either that or some other metric changed in relation to how powerful a backlink is that I don’t understand).

Why would google rely on backlinks when they have all that chrome and analytics data about UX? I believe at some point in the future we will see backlinks becoming unimportant as a ranking factor.

It's simple. First of all it is pretty much disclosure that they can not fight backlink spam and can't solve that part for years. Especially when it all started to be all about money "crawling budget etc..."

They have most answers already to all the questions that they have scraped from all over the web. They are not crawlers pretty much any longer, but scrapers IMO. No better than us trying to swim out there in these waters.
To understand more what I'm talking about, this patent submitted by G recently can shed some light to that: https://www.seobythesea.com/2022/05/generating-query-answers/ I'm in no way related to that website.

This is why you get straightforward answers to questions that have static answers. They don't need any more sites to reply that questions. This is also why insane traffic drop in PAA and more sites. All related to that IMO.

So they don't need to recrawl any site containing that information. Again, saving money.

Crawling inner site pages will be fine, once when they have website in their db. For all other actions they will ask for submission via GSC or live indexing API and take it from there. Again, not recrawling junk, just acknowledging it for the first time.

This is exactly what I believe as well. Google doesn’t need to take backlinks as a metric, and it only still exists because of legacy (i could be horribly wrong about this).

But then, not everyone uses analytics (or perhaps the chrome data is not that reliable yet). I guess a major portion of the sites don’t have any other footprints on google (kudos to them) and hence Google still has to rank them like they used to before.

Why its so hard to believe? The way current algorithms are developing, they will reduce the importance of links for sure. But it will take time.

Yepp we can’t ignore it. Technically, i think another metric like chrome data etc is hard to implement, because they can be gamed (and scaled up).

Just modify the source code of chromium, and produce an undetectable browser. You could be ranking for viagra after a month… Obviously, google doesn’t want that. As for content, AI is killing the market these days.
