Facebook Local Experiment....Your Thoughts??

Background: I run a yellow pages website- picking up local traffic of Google and monetizing it. However, Google is now hogging local queries through its own Google Maps - traffic on most YP sites are down (ours is 33% of what it used to be 18 months ago). I'm off to Facebook as a source of traffic for our site. Here is what I'll be doing over the next 3 months (will be posting updates as I go along). Your feedback, opinions are very much appreciated.

1. The Page

Plan to create a single page on one US City (Los Angeles, Miami, etc.). I am debating what theme to give the page.

• "i ♥ LA" (pros: simple; cons: there are other basic LA pages)
  
• "LA for life"
  
• "LA beats NorCal any day" (pros: plays into rivalry; cons: more limited appeal/demographic?)
  
• "LA Dealz" (pros: joining this page indicates you're interested in offers, may be easier to send them to my page; cons: less "sex appeal", perhaps less viral)

Your thoughts on these options?? I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this (or under-thinking it). I have a hunch that any of these may do the trick, but if you have a sense one might be better than other- which and why?

2. Fans

I've been told to buy critical mass to make the page go viral. Earlier I was thinking of creating profiles, friending people, and inviting to my Page. But on reading further, it was recommended I buy the first 10K or so fans, and that will help trigger further growth. Options are:

1. Buy FB ad on CPM basis
2. Put a project up on a Freelancer site (rates $2.50-$10/K)
3. Individual seller of Fans

I have a fairly specific requests of FB ID's and Fans specifically in one city (ie: Los Angeles). Any recommendations on the best way to do this? Ordinarly I might put it up on a freelance site, but I worry they may invite anyone to the page, not LA-specific people. For that reason I was leaning towards the FB ad which I can geo-target.

Tyler, thanks. Any thoughts on the FB Page name? Even just as a user of Facebook, would you be inclined to join any one of these groups more than others? So far, I've heard back from one person who favored "i heart NY". That may be the safest choice.

Carolina- thanks, most people seem to like the "I heart" option so I'm leaning towards that. I may go the bot route with respect to friends as you suggested- and grab ID's specific to LA (or from pages such as LA Lakers). I'll probably start with a buy of Fans, but your suggestion of create city-specific profiles may be a good complement.

khirad- Do you know if there are there services out there which will provide geo-targeted friends or even geo-targed fans for a page? Or would you suggest its best I do it on my end with a FB bot?

I have my FB profile (befriended a US Senator for fun) and am now creating a FB page "i heart LA". My next step is to add content to the page, develop a routine for making posts (without links initially), and then getting initial users for the page.

How do you plan on using Facebook Ads with what I'm assuming is a fake Facebook Account? Don't you need a credit card?

As for adding Fans, if anyone has suggestions, recommendations on where to go for service, let me know. Whether its someone here on BHW, or elsewhere. Ideally, its someone I can work with because our needs are specific- we need Fans from LA only.

Now on to getting Fans.

Step 1 was I bough 5 PVA's from BHW member - Jaerehan . Accounts were given to me 10 minutes- 3 females/2 males- all with US names. "Great Success" as Borat would say.

Step 2 - I setup the accounts. Added photo, setup profile. Check.

Step 3 - Fiddle around with the account- add some friends manually. I will do the same tomorrow before I put the bot on it.

As for adding Fans to the Page, I plan on using the profiles to friend people in Los Angeles, then invite them to the Page. While buying your fans may be a viable strategy for US-wide or International Pages (those that cater to a wide audience), finding providers for geo-targeted friends was tougher. I'm still open to it if the right svc provider shows up (another problem would be if I'm driving Fans, how would I measure what Fans the svc provider got? someone may know this, but at present, I don't).

I also plan to poach Fans from other LA-based Fan pages on Facebook. But the primary strategy will be to use the city-centric FB profiles. BTW, for gathering ID's and friending, I am going to be using Facebook Friend Bomber (which I used in the past, and worked reasonably well).

There are people who will invite you 1000 fans for 0.75c

Peter- already did. I've seen the same offers as you're mentioning. Getting geo-targeted fans though is another story. Typically people who can do that for 75 cents- already have tons of Facebook profiles- and they put a status update to invite Fans to the page. The route I'm going is a little more expensive to set up, but those are my requirements since I have a local site.

For geo targeting, I think facebook ad can give u better result cause u can select your audience there.
