This site has gone through a lot of ups and downs.
When it got sold for around $500k, it received a manual penalty (speculation: the EDU Scholarship link building was the reason behind this).

But the guy who built this site helped the new owner revive the site, and was very successful at it.
He is a smart guy, indeed.

Then every Google Update came with bad news for the site, they were able to recover from those, but it has been on a serious downfall since Feb 2020. And it seems like, that this was the last blow to the site!

Painful indeed. 10Beast was one of my greatest motivation back then, and truly brought the edu link trend many sellers benefited from.

That's also a reminder to flippers that a due deligence period after you buy an asset is necessary to protect you, always ask for that

When an affiliate website is being talked about openly, including the kind of links it acquired and it's no longer a question of if it'll get penalized. It became a question of when it's getting penalized.

I wonder why an investor would blow $500k on such knowing fully well the kind of risks surrounding it.

Strange a affiliate web site. Google don't want concorrence. The content quality is ok, but Google penalize the same. Google is only shit

It wasn't a complete waste IMO. The site was doing mid five figures a month (peaking at $80K).

The sale happened in 2017 - 5 years ago.

When the sale occurred, shit hit the fan - primarily due to the owner talking about Scholarship Link Building**, the sale amount and website details publicly. Many of these "SEO" and "Entrepreneurship" blogs picked up and couldn't stop salivating at this. End result, it caught Google's eye - with a huge swam of "holier than thou" idiots on Google openly tagging Cutts and the Google search team.

The new owner obviously wasn't too happy - and so they worked together to recover the site somehow. The site did recover rapidly and really well and stayed so for a really long time until better competition sprung up, the owners didn't update content and it slowly began dropping off the SERPs. However, I am pretty sure the owner managed to recover their investment.

To others reading this, this is why you don't thump your chest about website sales. And a lot of people prefer to keep their site sales private.

**Scholarship Link building is a form EDU link building, where you approach universities and offer a faux "scholarship" to their students - the university will often post this on their portal with a link to your site.

Abnormal link building. University sites have high authority and when you get links from them you obviously are gonna get pushed up in the serps. This is manipulative in Google's eyes and so, the penalty.
