Google is hyper-Darwinist pyramid building where unless you have a high KEI (high demand, low competition, trending upward, many words in long-tail keyword expression), link building is futile. It's all about giving the admin a reason not to remove links. I used to get thousands of people a day before Google domination, now a few people and a hundred robots. The people high on Google simply have a name, are grandfathered, and most importantly, outspend the competition.
