It mostly based on spam update. People seems some heavy drop but after some days it's back to normal.
Probably having more spam links, it leads to huge drop. Try to remove spam links, if it is your major cause.

Do people still use the disavow tool nowadays? I thought it wasn´t necessary since Google has gotten too smart now and it's capable of spotting them and just ignore them.

If you are referring to the drops of this weekend !!! Then I will say you are not the only one. Drop Yes..Fluctuations in the SERP's are clearly visible. But there is also the fact that many countries did had holidays.
