I’m not all that familiar with Ahrefs, but I can give you some guidance when it comes to the tool that I use.
I use Semrush for keyword research.
What I would do is I would look at the main keyword targets of my niche.
I usually use a free tool, like Google Keyword Planner tool, to get this information.
Once I have a shortlist of main keyword targets, I would enter them into a keyword discovery function—maybe Ahrefs has this as well, but for Semrush, it’s called the magic keyword tool.
Use the keyword discovery tool and focus on the questions.
The key is to build your blog around questions that have little competition or is mentioned by the tool that you're using as easier to rank for—this is usually measured in terms of keyword difficulty.
Rank for those, increase your domain authority and then start competing for specific, higher-competition keywords.
These higher-competition keywords, of course, also have higher commercial intent, but you're not going to make much progress if you start targeting these first.
You're going to be dead in the water because the competition is just too strong.
Focus, instead, on questions that are related to your niche that have a decent monthly search volume and low-enough keyword difficulty so that you have a fighting chance.
