I think I am speaking for everyone when I say I don't want to write in vain.

By that I mean writing posts that hardly anyone sees and affiliate links that are not being clicked and where nothing is being bought.

I have 3 blogs.

I used to use the autocomplete method and then choose topics to write about that did not seem to have good search results.

Results of this method have been mixed.

I still get the occasional visitor, but nobody clicks on ads or affiliate links.

Granted, I probably could optimize my site by decreasing the amount of money making elements, but the biggest problem is that less and less people come even though my content is well researched and to the point.

You could argue that I have to continue writing articles, yet I am unsure whether my topic finding method gives me good topics in the first place.

the topic finding is pretty good (you do need to create content on topics / keywords that people search for, so no problem there). But the reasons for which you are getting few visitors may be different and varied, so I wouldn't blame it on your topic finding skills :)

Where would you start?

Have you identified the problem?
You should check whether your content is ranking in SERPs? If your content is not ranking, then you should identify the root of the problem by doing competitor research.

No no no no, just used keyword research tools. ubersuggest used to do what you do before it got bought, but there are still many tools that will give you the autocomplete suggestions for free. Then you just need to find out the approx search volume using adwords (free) and search for competition manually. This is the free method ^

If you have money, just get ahrefs and it'll do all this for free.

Nothing wrong with autocomplete method for topics.

Content ranking in SERP? You mean that its pages are in google's index?

What is your traffic source? I thought your traffic is coming through Google search results. If you're driving traffic through social media or youtube, then you need a totally different strategy.

Google, bing and duckduckgo.

That's organic traffic. You should check if your pages are ranking in search engines. If you're not ranking, then check what your competitors are doing to rank and copy their strategies.

You might need a bit of time factor on your side, so schedule many posts in the future, and start with either another project or some alternative paid work,
while you wait for rankings that will come after you also build or buy some backlinks too.

That is my very approach. Forums, reddit and the like. Yet it looks like a never ending uphill battle.

First, select a niche then find some forums relevant to your niche. from the forum you can get lots of UGC topic ideas. Then research with SEO tools like semrush, ahref etc.

You may want to join social media groups related to your niche. Ask them what they want to know more or they want to read about this niche. You can then create your list with the top topics they choose. Of course, the tools that we have will help us but the real pulse that we need to rely on will be the real customers that will read and use our content.
