Need Help Regarding Siloing a Niche Website

Greetings everyone.

I'll get straight to the point.

I'm having issues while dividing a niche into separate silos. I have decided on a few silos in my mind, but I do not know if they'll work or not. Here's an example of a site in the "Piano" niche.

Now, according to me, I would create 3 silos for this site - Types | Accessories | Care. The 'Types' silo will have different piano types as its children. So the silo tree becomes something like this -

• Piano Types
  • Grand Piano
  • Electric Piano
• Piano Accessories
  • Pedals
  • Speakers
• Piano Care

I'm confused about whether this silo structure will work in this case. Or should I create separate silos for different types of the piano - Grand Piano, Electric piano, Accessories, Care. (Though this way I'll have problems in adding new types of pianos later)

Q1: Can someone suggest a better way of dividing niches like this in silos? How can I divide niches that have different types of stuff in it?

If I just have Grand Piano, Electric Piano, Random Piano Type, etc etc as my silos, then I'll have problems with content related to care and piano gear.

Also, I read somewhere that you shouldn't target long-tail variations of your parent silos.

Q2: If I have the "Best Grand Pianos" page in the parent silo for Grand Piano, then I shouldn't add posts that target "Best Grand Pianos for Students" type of keywords?

I guess so. I'm trying to learn about silo structure and I'm having a hard time with it for sure.

I tried finding websites that are siloed and are in the amazon reviews niche (just to get an idea how to structure niches), but didn't find any.

Most of the siloed sites that I found are either someone's personal agency, or huge authority sites that have several silos on broad topics.

Would you mind demonstrating silo using any random amazon reviews niche (like the piano one I used)? It's ok if you choose not to.

I would suggest this one.. Grand Piano is one silo, from that there is a menu for accessories ( pedals and speakers). Another one is Electric Piano, from that there is a menu for accessories pedals and speakers.

For targeting the Students keywords, you should have seperate page for optimizing better and ranking.

But I'll have to have at least 2-3 silos in my site for the navigation part.

As you mentioned in the reply above that I'm depending on Google for the structuring part, what's the correct way to go for it?

Also I had one more question. Do we create silos around keywords?

Like I'll have a Grand Piano silo for "best grand piano" keyword. Then I'll add supporting posts until that post starts ranking for that keyword.

You are talking about physical silos. Just ignore them for blogs.

You need virtual silos which are created by using internal linking. Electrical piano is one silo.-

Yes. I would suggest that one. You can keep seperate pages for supporting keywords. So that you can optimize the keywords from url itself.

So instead of dividing my entire niche into separate topics - I choose a keyword that seems profitable, create a silo for it, then, add supporting articles that cover everything related to it.

You are thinking about physical silos, forget the navigation / categories of your site, they don't matter, they are for users only, not for SEO.

You create a silo on the above. You finish the silo once the main article is ranking 1st.

Then repeat the process to create a 2nd silo, and use a different keyword such as electric pianos.

The supporting articles can be anything to do with grand pianos. It can be "best grand pianos for old people" "how to play the grand piano" "how to care for grand pianos"

As long as "best grand pianos for old people" returns articles in the top 10 serps for "best grand pianos for old people" you can use it as a seperate article. If the results come back and they are all "the best grand pianos" then you can't as it's just cannibalizing keywords. But this is nothing to do with siloing, this is to do with search intent, and you need to read up on search intent anyway otherwise you will just end up with keyword cannibalization issues and wasted efforts.

Oh, I never thought about silos this way. All the guides and articles that I read explained about creating physical silos and dividing the site into subsections.

This approach sounds great as well. I read the Siloing guide by @splishsplash , he talked about physical silos as well.

I'll definitely research more on this before starting any site.

As far as I'm aware, physical silo's are not really worth the effort/time unless you have an ecommerce store or something. For blogs just use virtual silos, especially with the power of internal linking in 2020. You can always do physical silo's in the future, but just stick to virtual silos for now and familiarise yourself with them and how they work. It will reinforce the concept of a silo and give you a lot better chance at creating a physical silo if you ever wanted too.

I've watched his videos and read his original article as well. But silo still confuses me a lot. Maybe because it's my first time reading and researching about siloing and I don't want to try it on a site and fail terribly.

I'm building a new site focussing on 3 different states in America.

So would each state be its own silo?
And each city would be within it's state?

If you know what I mean?

So Orlando would be in the Florida silo....
